Red Devil Hall of Fame
Ed definitely goes under the category of Red Devil “Super Fan”. A former instructor at LCC, Ed has been a fixture at Red Devil basketball and volleyball games for decades. He started coming to LCC games back in the 60’s when he and his wife Emma could be seen sitting in the top row at Myklebust Gym. Ed would intently be watching the game and Emma would be splitting her attention between the on-court action and her knitting and quilting projects. Emma knitted several blankets and hats for LCC players over the years. Emma, a longtime employee in the LCC Bookstore before retiring, passed away on July 25th, 2009.
Ed continued his and Emma’s legacy by continuing to come to games and stepping up his support for student/athlete scholarships through the LCC Foundation. He donated thousands of dollars to the LCC Athletics Excellence Fund and he invested in a lasting legacy for Emma by making a donation to support the Myklebust Gym project by naming the women’s basketball team room.
Ed was a long time member of the Lower Columbia Amateur Radio Club and the Roving Elks RV Club. He also was a bicycler and world traveler.
Hayes moved to Vancouver in recent years where he lives with his wife Echo. He doesn’t make it to as many Red Devil games as he used to but he never wavered in his support of the student/athletes, coaches and staff members at Lower Columbia College.
