LONGVIEW, WA. - The Lower Columbia Red Devils went toe-to-toe with the #2 ranked Edmond Tritons on Tuesday night but ultimately fell short in a hard-fought, four-set match at Myklebust Gymnasium. Despite a spirited effort in front of a home crowd of 107, the Red Devils couldn't overcome the Tritons' consistent attack, losing 3-1 (24-26, 17-25, 25-23, 24-26).
The Red Devils' offense was led by a fantastic performance from Kendall Humphrey, who recorded a team-high 17 kills with a solid hitting percentage of .244. Claire Neuman also provided a spark on the outside, adding 11 kills. Setter Karissa Otterstetter was instrumental in directing the offense, tallying 27 assists.
After dropping the first two sets, the Red Devils showed remarkable resilience. They stormed back in the third set, winning a tight 25-23 contest to keep their hopes alive. The momentum carried over into the fourth set, which was a nail-biter from start to finish. Unfortunately, a late run by the Tritons, punctuated by a service ace, sealed the match.
Defensively, the Red Devils battled hard against the powerful Edmonds attack. Kamryn Sande led the team with 17 digs, while Kendall Humphrey and Claire Neuman contributed 15 and 14 digs, respectively. Despite their efforts, the Red Devils struggled to contain Edmonds, who finished with a .213 hitting percentage and 46 kills.
While the loss drops Lower Columbia's record to 4-7, the team's performance against the 19-1 Tritons showed their fighting spirit and potential for future success. The Red Devils will look to build on their impressive third and fourth-set efforts as they continue their season.
The Devils begin regular season play Wednesday, Sept. 24, in Centralia, WA with a 7:00 pm first serve vs the Trailblazers.
