Centralia, WA - The Lower Columbia College volleyball team kicked off West Region conference play in style Wednesday night, traveling to Centralia and securing a decisive 3-0 sweep over the Blazers. The Red Devils controlled the match from the outset, winning by scores of 25-21, 25-17, and 25-19 to start their league campaign on a high note.
The Red Devil offense was firing on all cylinders, led by a powerful performance from freshman outside hitter Kendall Humphrey. She was a force at the net, tallying a match-high 14 kills on an outstanding .400 hitting percentage. Fellow freshman Claire Neuman provided a potent one-two punch, adding 12 kills of her own while hitting an efficient .303.
It was a true all-around effort for Lower Columbia. Setter Karissa Otterstetter expertly quarterbacked the offense with 28 assists, while also contributing significantly in other areas with 3 aces and 4 block assists. Neuman filled the stat sheet to lead all players with 16 total points, adding 2 aces, 9 digs, and 4 block assists to her kill total.
Defensively, libero Kamryn Sande anchored a stellar back-row effort, digging up a match-high 15 balls. The Red Devils' pressure from the service line was relentless, as they collected 10 service aces, with Sande and Otterstetter each chipping in three. The net defense was equally stout, as LCC's block forced Centralia into 21 attack errors and a paltry .105 hitting percentage for the night.
The comprehensive victory gets the Red Devils off to a perfect 1-0 start in conference play. The dominant road win serves as a strong statement to the rest of the West Region as LCC demonstrated its power at the net and scrappy defense to secure the sweep.
Devils have a short rest before getting back at it as they will be on the road again Friday, 9/26, for a 6:00 pm match at Highline College.
