LACEY, WA – The Lower Columbia College women's soccer team controlled the offensive flow but was ultimately snakebitten in a 1-0 road loss to the South Puget Sound Clippers on Wednesday, October 15.
The Red Devils put on an offensive clinic, peppering the Clippers' goal with 17 total shots, including nine on target. However, South Puget Sound goalkeeper Kiki Warbus delivered a standout performance, turning away every shot she faced to secure the win for her team.
After a scoreless first half, the Clippers found the game's lone goal in the 53rd minute when Crystal Carriedo scored off an assist from Jess Loto.
Lower Columbia's attack was relentless throughout the match. Maylee Reynolds led the charge with four shots, while Shelby Poland, Ava Gibbs, Annabelle Rogers, and Elizabeth Pfaff each added two shots of their own.
The Red Devils split goalkeeping duties between the two halves. Haley Loll started and played a clean first half, making one save. Cassandra Cleland took over in the second half, allowing the single goal and recording one save.
The loss drops the Red Devils' season record to 4-6-4 overall and 3-4-3 in NWAC West Region play.
Congratulations is in order for Devils sophomore defender, Ava Gibbs, who was selected the NWAC Defensive Player of the Week for her outstanding play.
Gibbs made a big impact for the Red Devils both defensively and offensively in their two matches on the week, earning four total points. In a 3-0 win over Green River, Gibbs had a goal and helped keep a cleansheet defensively. She then followed up with a second goal on the week in a 2-2 draw against Centralia.
"Ava had an outstanding performance against Green River to solidify the shutout for us," said head coach Steven Evans. "She had just as many crucial interventions in the Centralia game in addition to an amazing header goal from a corner kick to put us up 1-0."
