Lakers Flex In Sweep Over Red Devils

(Coos Bay, OR) – What a difference a day makes.

Less than 24 hours after the Lower Columbia College softball team pounded nine homers and collected 40 hits in a sweep over Grays Harbor, the Devils found the competition much more formidable in Coos Bay.

The Southwestern Oregon Lakers stayed unbeaten in the South Region with sweep over LCC 8-0 and 11-1 Thursday March 30th.

Game #1
Southwestern Oregon 8 Lower Columbia 0 (5 innings)

The Lakers got a two-run homer from Alapese Matautia in the first inning off LCC starter Alli Heater.  Matautia then cleared the bases with a three-run triple in the second.  Matautia had five RBI's to lead the way.

SWOC starter Destiny Vaughn was on her game as she allowed just two hits and struck out 11 Red Devils.

Leanna Russell and Emily Panush had singles, the only two LCC hits in the game.

Game #2
Southwestern Oregon 11 Lower Columbia 1 (5 innings)

The Devils showed some life in the first inning when Sunny Bennion walked and Teeghan Reams singled.  But both were left stranded and the Lakers pounced again.

A three run homer in the bottom of the first and then a seven run second frame had the top ranked Lakers on their way to the sweep.

Maliyah Twitty hit a solo homer for LCC in the top of the second.  It was her first college home run.

Darby DeRuyter came on for starter Reams and provided some solid relief.

The Lakers go to 8-0 in the South with the sweep.  The Red Devils slip to 6-2.

The Devils will try and bounce back Tuesday April 4th when they host the Centralia Blazers in a 3 pm double header at Tam O'Shanter Park in Kelso.
