The Lower Columbia College softball team could possibly be disappointed with splitting a home double header with Clark. But LCC is keeping its eyes on the South Region championship prize. The Devils are close.
The Devils hosted the Penguins on Saturday May 5th and won the first game 7-2 before dropping the nightcap 8-4.
Briana Harvill led the offense in the victory, going 3 for 3 with a homer, double, two RBI's and three runs scored. It was Harviil's 11th homer of the season.
Nizhoni Wheeler pitched a complete game in the victory, giving up just five hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts.
Kaylee Strahan went 2 for 2 with an RBI double.Â
Arielle Burnett had two hits and scored two runs.
Sarah Potwin celebrated her 19th birthday by hitting a solo home run.
In the second game, the Penguins scored four runs in the third inning and it turned out to be the key to their victory.
Starter
Christine Robbins threw up two zeros in the first two innings before running into trouble in that fateful frame. Robbins ended up going 3 2/3 innings and took the loss. Wheeler came on in relief and gave up three runs in 3 1/3 frames.
Burnett and Alyyssa Gustafson had two hits each. Of the 10 LCC hits, all were singles. The Devils came close to getting a huge extra basehit when
Cheyann Bartlett was just two feet short of what would have been a grand slam. The ball was caught at the fence.
The Devils are 19-5 in the South and maintain a three game lead with four to play. The 32-12 Devils will host Chemeketa in the final homes games of the year on Tuesday May 8th, 3 pm at Tam O'Shanter park. The seven Red Devils nearing graduation will be honored on Sophomore Day.
LCC will close out the regular season with two games at Grays Harbor on Friday May 11th.
