Dominant pitching, errorless defense and timely hitting were all on display for LCC Softball on Tuesday.
Â
An A-plus performance added up to a home field doubleheader sweep over fellow South Region powerhouse Southwestern Oregon, 4-0 and 10-2.
Â
Pitchers
Zoey Hughes (19-0) and
Ava Eib (19-1) took care of business in the circle, with the help of a defense that committed no errors and made a handful of outstanding plays.
Â
Many contributed offensively, led by freshman first baseman
Avery Garvey and sophomore second baseman
Gabi Silveria. Garvey had three singles and two RBI in the first game and added another single in game two, which plated the walk-off mercy rule run.
Â
Silveria had three hits on the afternoon, including her 17
th home run – a towering two-run shot that launched the Red Devils to a first inning lead in game two.
Â
LCC is now 41-2 overall and leads Mt. Hood by four games in the South Region standings with a 26-0 record. The Devils head up to Aberdeen on Friday for a DH vs. Grays Harbor.
Â
Game one: Lower Columbia 4, SWOC 0 – Hughes was nearly untouchable in the circle, throwing the complete-game three hitter with no walks and six strikeouts. Her NWAC-leading ERA stands at 1.15.
Â
Alisyn Parkin jump-started the offense in the second inning when hit by a pitch, Garvey followed with a single,
Danika Hallom produced a sac fly and
Kendall Humphrey added an RBI single to put the Devils up 2-0.
Â
Garvey kept it rolling with RBI singles in the third and fifth innings to close the scoring. She finished the game 3-3 with two RBI.
Â
Game two: Lower Columbia 10, SWOC 2 (six innings) – It was Eib's turn in the circle and she did not disappoint, scattering seven hits while walking just one and fanning six Lakers. Eib leads the NWAC in strikeouts with 211 and is second in ERA behind Hughes at 1.44.
Â
Elysa Nash opened the game for LCC with an opposite field ringing double and scored on Silveria's blast. The Devils went ahead 5-0 in the fourth with the help of a Laker throwing error and Eib's two-run single.
Â
SWOC strung together a solo home run, single and later a sac fly to score its only two runs of the day in the fifth inning.
Â
Up 5-2 the Red Devils scored five runs in the sixth to walk it off on the eight-run mercy rule.
Emma Langsi started the rally with a double.
Dani Ambriz walked and both scored when the Laker's catcher and left fielder made throwing errors on the same play.
Â
Parkin later smoked a two-run double and Garvey singled into center field to score Parkin and secure the win.
Â
Eib, Silveria and Parkin all drove in two runs. Nash and Silveria had two hits.
