The Lower Columbia softball team busted out the green socks on Saturday March 17th, hoping to celebrate St. Patrick's Day with a home sweep of Centralia.
The day started with a loss to Centralia 4-3 followed by a terrible start to the second game.  That's when the Devils decided to ditch luck and turn on the talent. A 10-run inning regained the St. Paddy's mojo and LCC went on to a 14-6 victory in five innings, capturing the split.
Tied 3-3 in the top of the 7th inning of the first game, the Trailblazers plated a run off
Nizhoni Wheeler and then held on for the 4-3 win. Wheeler came on in relief of starter
Christine Robbins and provided four frames of one-hit ball. Wheeler struck out five.
Robbins went three innings, giving up three runs. She gave up a solo homer after taking a wicked shot off the shoulder. Robbins had an RBI double at the plate.
Shanay Dotson's RBI single got the Devils within one.
Sarah Potwin tied up the game with an RBI double in the sixth.
The second game started bad as the Blazers scored three in the first and three in the second. The Blazers had four hits and took advantage of two Devil errors in the first. Starter
Caitlyn Grogan had to get six outs in the second as there was a dropped third strike, two errors and a dropped foul pop.
Down 6-2 and with two outs in the bottom of the 4th, the Devils exploded for 10 runs. Potwin's two-run single tied up the game, then
Skylar Hunter's three-run homer gave the Devils the advantage they would not relinquish.
The game ended on a pinch-hit, walk-off homer run by
Kaylee Strahan, triggering the eight-run mercy rule.
Wheeler got the win in the second game with three innings of hitless relief.
Brianna Harvill had two hits and two RBI's.
Cheyenne Gilbertson had two hits and two RBI's and also made a nice running catch in center field. Hunter had four RBI's to lead the way.Â
The Devils are 1-1 in South Region play and 9-5 overall. LCC is back home on Saturday March 24th for a 12 pm showdown with Clackamas at Tam O'Shanter Park.
