The Lower Columbia College softball team considerably improved it's post season positioning by sweeping a double header at Chemeketa on Tuesday May 9th.
The Devils beat the Storm by scores of 9-2 and 15-8 at Wallace Marine Park.
LCC is now tied with Centralia for the third spot in the South Division. The top three teams are automatically slotted into the NWAC tournament. The Centralia team will be in Kelso Friday afternoon for a 3 pm double header that will conclude the regular season. The Devils with a sweep can get the automatic berth. LCC is still in good shape for an RPI berth as they are 10th in RPI after the two wins over Chemeketa.
In game one Tuesday, LCC got a great pitching performance from
Jessica Gibson, who was earlier in the week named the NWAC Pitcher of the Week. Gibby went seven innings allowing just five hits with 10 strikeouts. Gibson allowed just two runs, one unearned.
Sam Boyce had a huge game, going 4 for 5 with two RBI's and three runs scored.
Gibson helped herself with two hits and three RBI's.Â
Christine Robbins had a two run double.Â
Shanay Dotson had two hits and scored two runs.
Robbins started the second game and was in cruise control before running into trouble in the 6th. Up 12-4, the Storm scored four runs to tighten things up.Â
Taylor Brooks came on to get an inning ending double play. Brooks then pitched a scoreless 7th to slam the door.
Robbins had a huge game at the plate and it would have been even bigger. Her 4th inning home run was taken away and ruled a triple when Chemeketa head coach Katie Fleer appealed that an LCC player high-fived Robbins prior to touching home plate. Gibson then picked up her teammate by immediately stepping to the plate and smashing an opposite field bomb. No one touched Gibby before she touched the plate.
Robbins was 3 for 5 with a homer, "triple", and six RBI's.
Boyce had another big game as she was 2 for 5, with a homer and three ribbies. Boyce ended up 6 for 10 in the double header.
Also in game two, Gibson was 2 for 5 with a homer and two RBI's. Dotson was 2 for 4 with four runs scored.
Bailey Hockett also had two RBI's.
Friday's games at Tam O'Shanter Park will feature Sophomore Day as Boyce, Gibson, Hockett,
Mariah Mendez, Brooks,
Hannah Rothwell and
Marissa Gardner will be honored prior to the 3 pm start.Â
