Devils Sweep Clark To Stay In South Title Contention

The Lower Columbia softball team beat the heat and swept the Clark Penguins with a pair of wins on Saturday May 7th.

The Devils won by scores of 5-1 and 13-4.  LCC sets in second place in the NWAC South with an 11-5 record, two games behind front runner Mt. Hood. The Devils will try for a sweep Tuesday in Gresham to tie things up in the standings.

The sweep Saturday began with Devil ace Krystina Fischer suffering from flu-like symptoms. She gave it a go, pitching three innings of scoreless ball.  Bailey Ellis came on in relief and provided four innings giving up just one run and scattering seven Clark hits.

Nicole Bolasky went 4 for 4 and extended her school-record stolen base mark to 54.  Ashley Kelly hit her school-record 22nd double and had two RBI's raising her total to 57.

Mariah Mendez had an RBI double to fuel a three run 5th inning that provided LCC with some cushion.  Madison Barr also had a hit and an RBI for the Devils.

The Devils jumped on Clark for three runs in the first inning of the second game.  A five run 4th put the game into cruise control for LCC.

Ellis got the win with three innings of work, allowing three hits and two runs.  Hannah Rothwell took the circle in relief and went three frames, giving up six hits and two runs.

Shyanne Chandler went 4 for 4 with an RBI to lead the offense.  Bailey Hockett broke loose with three hits and four RBI's.  She had a homer and a double.

Sam Boyce was 2 for 3 with three RBI's.  Boyce handled the catching duties in both games during the high 80's weather.

Kelly and Barr were each 2 for 4 with an RBI.  Kelly is being pushed for the LCC doubles record by Jessica Gibson who hit one in the second game. Both players have 22 on the season.

Bolasky had three steals in the game to run her incredible total to 57.

The Devils twin bill at Mt. Hood Tuesday will most likely decide the South title. A sweep would tie things up in the standings at 13-5. A split would maintain the Saints two game lead.

The Devils close out the regular season Friday May 13th at Tam O'Shanter Park with a double header against Clackamas.  The sophomore day double dip begins at 3 pm.
