The Red Devils Softball season game to an end at the NWAC Softball Championships on Sunday May 22nd.Â
The Devils fought hard all weekend and showed they are one of the premiere teams in the NWAC.
Their first game was against the Everett Trojans who they defeated in extra innings 3-2 off a
Bailey Hockett walk off home run.
Bailey Ellis pitched three outstanding innings only allowing one hit.
Krystina Fischer came on  in relief allowing 6 hits but striking out 8.
Nicole Bolasky went 2 for 4 at the plate and added 1 more stolen base to here record, tying the NWAC All-Time stolen base record.
Jessica Gibson went 2 for 3 with a double, giving her 24 doubles on the year.
Next up for the Devils was the eventual champion Mt. Hood Saints team. The Devils took the early lead in the 3
rd with Doubles from both
Ashley Kelly and
Sam Boyce. LCC held the lead until the bottom of the 7
th when the Saints used three singles and an LCC error to win it 4-3.
Ashley Kelly, Bolsaky and Gibson all went 2 for 4 at the plate. Hockett had another good appearance going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI. Bolasky got stolen base number 65 making her the NWAC's All-Time stolen base leader. The loss to Mt. Hood put the Devils into the elimination bracket where their first opponent would be Edmonds Tritons.
Saturday the Devils came out strong beating a solid Edmonds team 9-4 in 7 innings. Ellis pitched a complete game with 7 hits, 2 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Boyce went 3 for 4 with a home run. The Devils hit well with Gibson going 3 for 5,
Madison Barr 2 for 4,
Mariah Mendez 2 for 3,
Hannah Rothwell 1 for 2 and Bolasky 2 for 4 with yet another stolen base, giving her 66 on the year.Â
Next up was the newest college to join the NWAC, the North Idaho Cardinals. The Cards came in with some of the best hitters in the NWAC but this didn't faze the Devils in the slightest. The NIC pitcher struggled in the first inning and the Devils took advantage scoring 5 runs in the top of the 1
st. North Idaho put up 3 runs in the 2
nd and Devils responded in the 3
rd with 2 runs on of which came off of a home run shot by Mendez. The Cardinals got a run in the 4
th making the score 7 – 4. In the 7
th the Devils put up two more runs off of singles by Barr and
Maggie Harshaw.
Taylor Brooks who came in relief for Fischer in the 4
th faced the heart of the NIC line up and gave up only two hits in the 7
th resulting in one run scoring off a Devils error. Brooks pitched around the remaining batters and forced two pop ups and a ground out to secure the victory. Brooks pitch 4 innings giving up 5 hits, and 2 runs to get the win. Mendez went 2 for 3 at the plate, Barr was 2 for 4 and Bolasky got another stolen base to put her at 68.
Red Devils started to play their 3
rd game of the day against the Bellevue Bulldogs but after two inning the game was suspended because of rain. Unfortunately the damage was already done has the Bulldogs managed to put up 4 runs before the game was stopped.
The game resumed the next day, Sunday, May 22, at 10 am. Bellevue picked up right where they left off scoring 3 more runs on the Devils in the 3
rd and another one in the 4
th. Going into the 5
th the score was 8-0, Bellevue. Barr got things started in 5
th with a single followed by another single from Bolasky. Bolasky then got her 69 stolen base. Kelly put up another single to score Barr but Bolasky was called out on a very questionable runner interference call and just like that the momentum that had been building for the Devils was gone. LCC put up four runs in the 5
th but held on to defeat the Devils 11 - 4. Gibson pitched 3 innings giving up 10 hits and striking out 2. Ellis came in relief giving up 7 hits and striking out 1. Boyce had a 3 run home run in the 4
th.
The Devils season ends with a record of 33-14 and a 5
th place finish at the championships.
With plenty of star players returning and an exciting recruiting class, look for LCC to return to prominence in 2017. Â
