The Lower Columbia College softball team took one look at the South Region schedule and knew that starting at Clackamas and at Southwestern Oregon would be a huge challenge.
The challenge was more than met. The Devils came up with sweeps.
After taking a pair at Clackamas last Wednesday, the Devils made the long trip to Coos Bay and swept top-ranked Southwestern Oregon 9-6 and 6-4 on Saturday April 9th.
Bailey Ellis got the win in the first game, going five gritty innings against the talented Lakers. She scattered eight hits and gave up five runs.Â
Krystina Fischer came on to pitch the final two innings for the save.
Both teams scored three runs in the first inning in what looked to be a big offensive game.
LCC got homers from
Ashley Kelly,
Jessica Gibson, Hanna Rothwell and
Maggie Harshaw. It was the sophomore Harshaw's first collegiate homer.
Kelly led the way with four RBI's. Gibson and
Mariah Mendez had three hits each.
Nicole Bolasky had three steals to run her season total to 30.
In game two, Bolasky continued her chase of the school record (38) with three more steals. She now has 33. Bolsaky had three hits, drove in a run and scored twice to go along with all the thievery.
Gibson had two hits and two ribbies.Â
Sam Boyce had two hits and an RBI. Harshaw had two hits and a run driven in.
Madison Barr and
Bailey Hockett also had two hits each.
The Devil survived despite two homers from SWOC's Shevan DeFreitas.
Fischer went four innings to get the win and
Hannah Rothwell was key with three innings of scoreless, two-hit relief for the save.
The Devils are now 4-0 in the South as they get ready to host Clark for two games on Tuesday April 12th. The first game at Heerensperger Field at Tam O'Shanter Park in Kelso begins at 3 pm.
