It was Sophomore Day for LCC softball on Thursday May 7th. Eight great sophomores were honored inbetween a home double header with the Chemeketa Storm.
The Devils lost a tough, nine inning game in the opener as the Storm won it 5-4. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth inning of the second game, the Devils exploded for four runs and held on for a 5-4 victory.
The between games sophomore ceremony honored eight talented Red Devil student/athletes playing on the home field for the final time. Sierra Richards, Cassidy Harding, Jenny Hagen, Chelsey Miller, Lexie Rodriguez, Mady Hanna, Breezy Hockett and Julia Breidt were all introduced with parents and family. Miller also had surprise guests when the Longview Fire Department sent the battalion chief and two other firefighters. Miller was named the LCC Fire Science Student of the Year and has been training with the LFD. The exploits of these talented student/athletes were quite remarkable.
Chemeketa's win in the opener took extra frames. Krystina Fischer went six innings for LCC, giving up four runs. Bailey Ellis was solid in three innings of work, but she gave up the run in the 9th and took the loss.
The Devils offense was held in check. Hagen hit an RBI triple and Madison Barr had two RBI's.
It wasn't looking much better in the second game, as the Devils offense was ineffective over five innings. The sixth inning four-run uprising was highlighted by two run double from Richards and Hagen. Breidt, who played youth ball and high school ball at Tam O'Shanter, made her last appearance there memorable. She scattered eight hits over seven innings. She gave up a two-run homer in the 7th to make it close, but then slammed the door with a game ending strikeout with a screwball.
The Devils are 9-9 in South Region play and will complete the schedule Friday afternoon with two games at Clackamas, first pitch 3 pm.
The Devils will open NWAC tournament play Friday May 15th at Delta Park in Portland. The tournament seeding should be released sometime Sunday or Monday. The opening round games will be at 10 am and 12 pm, with second round games Friday at 2 pm and 4 pm.
