The Lower Columbia Red Devils baseball team demonstrated incredible toughness this weekend, shaking off a difficult start to earn a four-game series split on the road against the Columbia Basin Hawks.
The series opened on March 20 with a pair of tough losses for the Red Devils. In the first matchup, Lower Columbia fell 12-2 as the Hawks jumped out to an early lead with a five-run first inning.
Graham Learing took the loss on the mound for the Red Devils, pitching one inning. The Lower Columbia offense managed five hits in the contest, with Martyn Hernandez and Karsten Hansen each driving in a run.
The second game of the day evolved into a wild, high-scoring shootout, but the Red Devils ultimately came up short in a 14-11 defeat. Despite the loss, the Lower Columbia bats came alive to produce an impressive 17 hits.
Jackson Wendt had a stellar performance at the plate, tallying four hits and three RBIs. Keagan Kelly also had a huge game for the offense, recording three hits, including a double, and scoring three runs. Pitcher Quinn Hubbs was tagged with the loss after a rough second inning where the Hawks plated seven runs to take control.
Refusing to back down, the Red Devils returned to the diamond on March 21 and completely flipped the script. In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, Lower Columbia dominated from start to finish to secure a 7-1 victory.
The absolute story of the game was the masterful pitching of Caden Spanier, who earned the win by throwing eight brilliant innings. Spanier allowed zero runs and gave up just a single hit while striking out five Hawks batters. The offense provided plenty of run support behind him, highlighted by James Cote, who blasted a home run and finished with two RBIs and two runs scored. Martyn Hernandez also contributed a double and two RBIs to help seal the blowout win.
In the series finale, Lower Columbia clinched the series split with a hard-fought 4-2 victory.
Starting pitcher Justin Fuller kept the Hawks in check, allowing just two runs on two hits over six strong innings of work. Rudy Larson pitched in relief to earn the win, and Matthew Kosderka successfully closed the door in the final frame to pick up the save. Offensively, the Red Devils collected six hits, paced by Keagan Kelly, who went 2-for-2 with a double and a run scored, and Martyn Hernandez, who added two more hits and an RBI to cap off a fantastic weekend of baseball.
Lower Columbia finishes its pre-season slate boasting a strong 17-7 record. The Red Devils will now turn their attention to region play, opening on the road Thursday, March 26, against the Pierce College Raiders in Lakewood, WA. The doubleheader is slated for a 3:00 pm start.
The action then returns home on Saturday, March 28, when LCC hosts Pierce for a midday doubleheader starting at 12:00 pm. Following the conclusion of the second game, the Devils will take time to honor and recognize the team's sophomore players for their contributions to the program.
