Devils Open League Play With Sweep Of Harbor

Saturday, March 29
Game One

Lacey, WA – The Lower Columbia College Red Devils unleashed a powerful offensive display on Saturday, cruising to a dominant 20-2 victory over the Grays Harbor Chokers in a league matchup at The RAC. The game was decided in just seven innings.

After a scoreless first frame, Lower Columbia's bats erupted, scoring runs in every subsequent inning. The onslaught included a five-run third, a seven-run fourth, and a four-run fifth inning, quickly putting the game out of reach for the home team.

The Red Devils collected 12 hits but truly capitalized on control issues from the Grays Harbor pitching staff, drawing an impressive 15 walks and getting hit by pitches 9 times. This plate discipline led to constant traffic on the bases and fueled the high run total.

Leading the offensive charge for Lower Columbia were Sam Davidson and Garrett Cooper. Davidson went 4-for-5 with a double, scoring twice and driving in a game-high 7 runs. Cooper contributed significantly with 3 hits, including two doubles, scoring once and knocking in 6 runs. Lead off hitter Langan Naylor set the table effectively, scoring 4 runs on 2 hits and 3 walks.

On the mound, Lower Columbia starter Chasye Oxborrow earned the win (2-1). He pitched 4.0 innings, allowing 2 earned runs on 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 6 batters. Cole Pentin followed with 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, yielding just 1 hit and striking out 4 to close out the game. The Red Devils played clean defense behind their pitchers, committing no errors.

Grays Harbor struggled to keep pace, managing only 5 hits against the Lower Columbia pitching staff. They plated single runs in the second and third innings. Kaleb Ames had two of the Chokers' five hits. The Grays Harbor pitchers issued 16 walks and hit 9 batters while surrendering 12 hits and 14 earned runs. Defensive struggles compounded the issues, with the team committing 5 errors. Starter Matthew Alexander took the loss (1-4) for the Chokers.

The final score stood at 20-2 in favor of Lower Columbia after seven innings of play.

Game Two

Backed by outstanding pitching and flawless defense, Lower Columbia College completed a doubleheader sweep of Grays Harbor with a 3-0 shutout victory in the second game Saturday afternoon at The RAC.

In contrast to the offensive explosion of game one, the Red Devils relied on pitching and defense to secure the win in the seven-inning nightcap. Starter Kaden Larson set the tone, delivering six superb scoreless innings. He allowed just four hits and, crucially, issued no walks while striking out four Choker batters to earn the victory. Matthew Kosderka came on for the seventh inning, retiring the side in order to lock down his eight save and preserve the combined shutout.

Lower Columbia's defense was perfect behind its pitchers, committing no errors and turning three key double plays throughout the contest to erase Grays Harbor baserunners.

Offensively, the Red Devils manufactured runs when needed. They pushed single runs across in the second, fifth, and seventh innings. While managing only five hits total, they made them count. Sam Davidson and Jace Nagler each had RBI singles. Blake Mattern tripled and scored a run, while Owen Cummins contributed a double.

Grays Harbor's offense was stifled throughout the game, managing only four singles and failing to score. Their efforts were hampered by hitting into three double plays. Despite the lack of run support, pitcher Diego Morfin battled for the Chokers, throwing a complete game. He went all 7.0 innings, allowing three earned runs on five hits and two walks, striking out five Red Devils in the losing effort. Morfin also contributed one of his team's four hits. Grays Harbor committed two errors defensively.

The 3-0 win gave Lower Columbia a sweep of the day's league doubleheader against Grays Harbor.

Sunday, March 30
Game One

LONGVIEW, WA  – The Red Devils responded immediately after falling behind early, erupting for nine runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looking back, cruising to a 16-2 victory over Grays Harbor on Sunday at David Story Field. The game, the first of a doubleheader, was shortened to 6.5 innings due to the run rule.

Grays Harbor jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first, capitalizing on walks and timely hitting. However, the lead was short-lived as the Lower Columbia offense came alive in the bottom half of the frame.

The nine-run explosion was capped by a towering grand slam from designated hitter Harlan Rowe. It was Rowe's only hit of the day, but he finished with a game-high 5 RBIs, later adding another run driven in via a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded.

Lower Columbia continued to pour it on, adding a run in the second, two in the fourth, and four more in the sixth to put the game well out of reach. The Red Devils pounded out 13 hits and showed patience, drawing 8 walks while also taking advantage of 7 hit batters from the Grays Harbor pitching staff.

Besides Rowe's heroics, several other Red Devils had big days. Langan Naylor had 2 hits and 2 RBIs, Brayden Oram collected 2 hits including a double and drove in 2, Garrett Cooper added 2 hits with a double and an RBI, and Owen Cummins chipped in with a hit and 3 RBIs.

On the mound for LCC, Wyatt Macdonald got the start but only went 0.2 innings before the Devils made a change. Kaden Harris earned the win in relief striking out 6 with 2 walks and 2 hits on 3.1 innings of work. Aaden Anderson went 2 inning with no hits, 1 walk, and 2 k's of scoreless relief. The staff combined for 10 strikeouts but did issue 8 walks.

It was a tough outing for Grays Harbor's pitchers. Starter Orion Pate recorded only one out and was charged with nine earned runs on five hits and four walks. The bullpen also struggled to contain the potent LCC lineup, ultimately allowing 16 earned runs on 13 hits, 8 walks, and 7 hit batsmen. Offensively, after the first inning, Grays Harbor managed only one more hit, finishing with three total. They struck out 10 times and left 10 runners stranded on base. K. Frazier had one of the hits, a double.

The 16-2 win continued Lower Columbia's strong performance against Grays Harbor in the weekend series.

Game Two

Lower Columbia defeated Grays Harbor 6-1 at David Story Stadium in Longview, Washington. The game, attended by 106 spectators under cloudy skies, saw Lower Columbia improving their impressive record to 26-2 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while Grays Harbor fell to 2-21 overall and 0-4 in conference action.

Lower Columbia seized control early, scoring consistently through the first five innings. They opened the scoring in the first inning, followed by additional runs in the second, third, and fifth innings, cementing their dominant performance. Grays Harbor managed to score their lone run in the third inning but struggled offensively, managing only three hits throughout the game.

Standout performances for Lower Columbia included Garrett Cooper, who notably hit a home run over the center field barn, contributing two RBIs and scoring twice. Teammate Kaden Harris added a key double, and Drew Abercromb contributed with an RBI and reached base twice, keeping offensive pressure high.

Lower Columbia pitcher Quinn Hubbs had a strong showing to earn the win, striking out five batters over four innings, while allowing only three hits and no earned runs. Stephen Hammergren threw 2 innings of relief striking out one with no hits allowed and no runs. Ryan McClaskey closed the game without allowing a run and striking out one, solidifying their victory.

Defensively, Lower Columbia was nearly flawless, committing only one error compared to Grays Harbor's single error as well.

The final linescore reflected Lower Columbia's dominance:

  • Lower Columbia: 6 runs, 7 hits, 1 error, 6 left on base.

  • Grays Harbor: 1 run, 3 hits, 1 error, 5 left on base.
