LONGVIEW, WA — The Lower Columbia College Red Devils showcased a powerful team effort on Friday, sweeping the visiting South Puget Sound Clippers 3-0 at Myklebust Gymnasium. With scores of 25-16, 25-23, and 25-18, the Devils controlled the match from start to finish, improving their conference record to 8-5.
The story of the night was the Red Devils' relentless pressure from the service line. As a team, LCC racked up an incredible 18 service aces, keeping the Clippers' defense off-balance and unable to establish an offensive rhythm. The pressure was a key factor in South Puget Sound committing 23 attack errors and finishing with a negative hitting percentage.
LCC's offense was efficient and well-distributed by setter Karissa Otterstetter, who finished the match with 19 assists. She connected with multiple hitters, including Kendall Humphrey who tallied 6 kills and 2 aces, and Claire Neuman, who led the team with 8 kills. Irene Martinez also made a significant impact, contributing 3 crucial aces and 2 kills.
Defensively, the Red Devils were anchored by libero Kamryn Sande. She led the back row with 12 digs, consistently thwarting the Clippers' attacks and providing solid first passes for the offense. Sande also proved formidable from the service line, adding 3 aces to the team's impressive total.
After cruising to a 25-16 win in the first set, the Devils displayed their composure in a tight second set, winning 25-23. They left no doubt in the third, using several key scoring runs to close out the match 25-18 and secure the sweep.
The Devils will be back on the home court Friday, October 17, with a 6:00 pm match vs the Centralia Trailblazers. Currently Lower Columbia, Centralia, and Highline are in a three tie for the top spot in the NWAC west region standings.
