(Longview, Wa) Lower Columbia College's women's basketball team continued its strong season with a dominant 81-55 victory over the Highline Thunderbirds on Saturday evening at Myklebust Gymnasium. The Red Devils improved their record to 11-9 overall and 5-1 in league play with an impressive team effort that showcased their depth and efficiency.
From the opening tip, LCC took control, jumping to a 24-8 lead by the end of the first quarter. They maintained the pressure throughout, leading 46-19 at halftime and never allowing Highline to close the gap. The Red Devils were sharp offensively, shooting 40.8% from the field, including 10 three-pointers on 30 attempts, and converting 72.2% of their free throws.
Lower Columbia's attack was balanced, with multiple players making significant contributions. Karlee VonMoos led the team with 17 points, shooting an efficient 8-of-12 from the field, while also grabbing six rebounds and recording two blocks.
Maris Baklund added 14 points, including four three-pointers, providing a spark off the bench.
Reigha Niemeyer showcased her all-around game with 11 points, nine rebounds, nine assists, and four steals, falling just short of a triple-double.
Michaela Medico also scored in double figures, contributing 13 points while pulling down seven rebounds and going 7-of-8 from the free-throw line.
The Red Devils' bench played a critical role, accounting for 35 of the team's 81 points. The team's defensive pressure was evident throughout, forcing 26 turnovers and turning them into 30 points. LCC also dominated the paint, outscoring Highline 36-22 in that area and controlling the boards with 39 total rebounds.
Highline's top performer was Jesselle Victo, who scored a game-high 18 points on 7-of-20 shooting. Despite her efforts, the Thunderbirds struggled to find rhythm, shooting just 37.5% from the field and 21.4% from three-point range.
Devils have some time off with the bye week. Next match for the ladies will be on Wednesday February 5th, at Centralia. Tip is set for 5:00 pm. Â
