Troy Shorey was a winner in his debut as the Lower Columbia College volleyball coach.
The Devils swept Umpqua 25-23, 25-18 and 25-17 on Monday August 26
th at Myklebust Gym.
Leading the Red Devil attack was
Samantha Farland and
Morgan Garrison with nine kills each. Garrison, the redshirt freshman coming off a knee injury, was very efficient with a .353 kill percentage.
Freshman
Allison Orantes had 21 assists in her debut as the LCC setter.
Charissa Schierman also had 11 assists and two kills.
Kenny Collins showed her leadership and energy while contributing eight kills and a team-high 11 digs.
Madi Noel is back for another season as one of the top libero's in the NWAC. She had nine digs and two assists against Umpqua.
The Devils had 13 aces in the match, led by the five from
Lillian Halberg.
Delaney Fortelney and Orantes had three each.
Shorey was pleased to get that first victory as the Devil head coach. "It's pretty special", he said. "I couldn't ask for our players to play any better than they did today. It's exciting."
"It's just one step moving forward, not only being a win but moving on to continue getting better each match."
The 1-0 Devils will travel to Pasco for the Coach G Invitational Friday and Saturday at Columbia Basin College. LCC will take on Whatcom at 1 pm Friday. The Devils then have a rematch with Umpqua at 5 pm Friday. The Devils will play host Columbia Basin at 11 am Saturday and then close out the event with bracket play Saturday afternoon.
