Clackamas Takes Two From The Devils

(Kelso, WA) – The Lower Columbia College softball team dropped both ends of a key double header with division rival Clackamas on Saturday May 6th in Kelso.

The Cougars solidified third place in the South Region with two victories, 5-0 and 11-10.

Game #1 - Clackamas 5 Lower Columbia 0

Riley Schopp had a great outing against the Devils. The Cougar pitcher went seven innings and allowed just three singles, striking out nine Red Devils.

LCC starter Alli Heater kept the Devils in the game with six innings allowing five runs (four earned). Cassidy Phelps had the big hit, a two run homer in the 5th inning.

Game #2 – Clackamas 11 Lower Columbia 10

The second game was a wild affair. LCC jumped out to a 9-2 lead after four innings. Raychel Squibb got things started with a two-run homer in the first. Destiny Dunlap had a three run shot in the third. Teeghan Reams followed with a three run homer in the 4th.

Shopp was brought in to calm the storm although she was roughed up early in her relief stint.  But she held the devils to just one run in the final three frames.

Meanwhile, Clackamas caught fire in the last three innings, scoring three runs in each.  The Cougars led 11-9 going to the bottom of the 7th.

The Devils came back with a Kennedy Williams double followed by a Sunny Bennion run scoring single to make it a one run game.  But Bennion was left in scoring position on a game ending strikeout.

Bennion was 4 for 5.  Sawyer Stenson was 2 for 5.  Squibb was 2 for 2 with the two-run homer.

The standings show Clackamas at 18-7 in league. The Devils drop to 15-11.  LCC will play a non-league double header at Linfield on Monday May 8th and then will close out the South Region play with a home twin bill against first place Southwestern Oregon on Friday May 12th.  It's Sophomore Day as we honor our six departing sophomores in a ceremony between games.
