(Olympia, WA) -- The Lower Columbia College volleyball team got a hard fought 3-1 road win at South Puget Sound on Friday, October 27.
The set scores were 25-14, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22.
Lower Columbia started the night looking strong against the Clippers cruising to an easy 25-14 set one win.
Then in the second set the Devils found themselves down 4-10 due to some costly errors. Coach
Carri Smith called a timeout to regroup and get back on track but the momentum was all with the Clippers as they continued to hit the ball hard extending the lead to 15-23. Lower Columbia fought back to get within 1 at 23-24 but the Clippers prevailed on an ace serve to win the set 24-26.
The Devils were on their heels a bit but they continued to fight and in the third set, after getting down 5-11, LCC hit kill after kill and a great block by Kate Onepsot-Danforth to tie it up at 11-11. From it was a lot of great play from both teams with terrific rallies but the Red Devils just got stronger as the set progressed. The set was capped off with a great kill by
Payton Torrey to make it 25-21.
The fourth set, just like the entire match, was a back and forth battle with dig after dig keeping the rallies alive. With the Devils up 5-2, the Clippers rallied to go up 5-8. Then LCC went up 11-9, only to have the Clippers come back and go up 13-15. Devils responded with
Kate Johnson hitting a power shot, followed by another Onespot-Danforth block to make it 17-16 Devils. South Puget Sound would then go on to collect four kills and a service ace to go up 18-21. After an LCC timeout the Devils kicked it into 5th gear as they took advantage of a Clippers service error and responded with 3 straight points to tie it up at 21-21. Then the Devils took over and won the set 25-22 to win the match 3-1.
Paige Chinchen lead the Devils with 15 kills, 17 digs, and 2 ace serves.
Kate Johnson added 11 kills.
Kate Onespot-Danforth had 9 kills, 15 digs, and 7 blocks
Kendal Collins and
Samantha Farland both had 6 kills. Farland also had a block and 14 assists. Collins was all over the back line with 21 digs.
Madi Noel was outstanding with 29 digs.
The win keeps Lower Columbia in control of their own destiny. They are currently tied for first place with the Highline Thunderbirds in the West Region.
