(Olympia, WA) – The Lower Columbia College women's basketball team shook off a slow start and rallied for a 66-62 victory at South Puget Sound on Wednesday January 18
th.
Down 13-5 with less than a minute left in the first quarter,
Kyla McCallum hit a three-pointer that triggered some momentum going forward. Down 13-8 after one, LCC outscored the Clippers in each of the next three quarters.
The Red Devil defense forced 21 South Puget Sound turnovers. The Devils had to deal with some foul trouble to starters
Katelynn Forner,
Aivine Soakai and
Katie Hanson. But LCC got solid performances off the bench.
McCallum led LCC with 14 points and no turnovers in 23 minutes.
Caitlin Wachmann hit 5 of 6 shots and scored 10 along with five boards. Despite playing with an injured shoulder,
Macy Fuller scored eight big points in just eight minutes of playing time.
Paige Mace missed all seven of her three point attempts, but she does so much more and ended up with 11 points, three boards and seven assists.
Forner had 12 points and seven rebounds before fouling out.
It was a gritty team victory for LCC. The Devils go to 3-0 in the West Region, 13-5 overall. Lower Columbia will travel to Lakewood to face the 3-0 Pierce Raiders under the direction of new head coach Marquessa Gilson. Gilson was an assistant on LCC's NWAC championship team last season.
The start time of the game has been changed to 6 pm to allow for a funeral service at the Pierce Gym earlier in the day.
