Devils Win 3 Of 4 In Chehalis

(Chehalis, WA) – The NWAC softball committee on Tuesday voted by a 5-3 margin to cancel the NWAC Cross-Over Tournament in Chehalis.  When three of the schools who voted for cancellation then formed an event in Yakima, the Chehalis event was rebranded as the Chehalis Round Robin and games were played anyway.

The teams that stayed the course, including Lower Columbia, came to Chehalis and found the hospitality was great and the facility outstanding.

The Red Devils played four games on the Chehalis turf and won three of them.

Friday April 8th

DOUGLAS 7 LOWER COLUMBIA 3

The Royals snapped a 3-3 tie by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-3 victory.

LCC had a 2-0 lead after 3 ½ innings on an RBI sac fly by Jade Behic in the first inning and a Katie Adkins RBI single in the third. But Douglas rolled a three spot in the 4th to take the lead.  Behic's opposite field solo homer tied the game.

In the circle, Behic worked around traffic allowing 10 hits with four walks.

LOWER COLUMBIA 6 EDMONDS 3

The Devils bounced right back and came up with a win against a good Edmonds team.  Darby DeRuyter worked out of several jams and got great defense behind her to get the complete game victory.

One of the highlights was a third inning triple play as shortstop Adkins came out of nowhere to catch a soft liner then flipped to Jada Cargo-Acosta at second who threw on to Ada Williams at first.

After Edmonds plated two runs in the top of the first the Devils came right back with three in the bottom of the frame on Ada Williams RBI double followed by run scoring singles from Adkins and Sunny Bennion.

Katelyn McGough hit a monster home run in the second inning that nearly reached the train tracks beyond right-center field.

Adkins and Bennion came through with more clutch hitting with RBI singles in LCC's two-run 5th inning.

Saturday April 9th

LOWER COLUMBIA 23 TREASURE VALLEY 1

With the wind blowing out, the Devils turned their game with Treasure Valley into a home run derby.  The D's hit eight homers including three each from McGough and A. Williams.  Behic and Cargo-Acosta also went deep.

McGough's third of the game was another Titanic shot that was estimated to travel about 320 feet.

Meanwhile Behic cruised to the five-inning complete game victory allowing just two hits and two walks.

LOWER COLUMBIA 8 SKAGIT VALLEY 7

Taylor Avram lined an RBI single in the bottom of the 7th for the walk-off game winner for the Devils against the Cardinals.  The back-and-forth battle featured 23 combined hits and the Cards took advantage of three LCC errors.

DeRuyter competed through it all to go the distance, scattering 11 hits allowed and seven runs, but just four earned.

Behic continued her homer binge with a solo shot, one of her two hits in the game.  Angela Sullivan had a laser beam homer to left and she played well at first base.  Cargo-Acosta also had two hits and two RBI's for LCC.

By going 3-1 in Chehalis, the Devils are now 15-9 on the season.  They return to league play, where they are 6-2 in the South Division, with a rescheduled double header at Clackamas Wednesday April 13th.  The first game in Oregon City is slated for 3 pm, weather permitting.
