Red Devil Softball set out to play a four-game schedule February 26-27 in Bellevue, but in the end completed one game and just half of another due to inclement weather.
Â
Heavy rain in the Puget Sound on Saturday led to fourth inning suspension of Lower Columbia's evening game with Everett, with LCC ahead 3-1. A day long soaking rain canceled all games on Sunday.
Â
In Saturday morning's opener under dry skies, Bellevue plated nine runs in the fifth inning to break up a tight game and defeat LCC 10-0 in five innings.
Â
Jade Behic had a single and double as part of the Red Devils six hits in the first four innings. But LCC could not produce the clutch hit to drive in any runs, leaving eight runners on base.
Â
In the meantime, Behic limited the Bulldogs to two hits with seven strikeouts through four innings.
Â
Leading 1-0 starting the fifth inning, Bellevue strung together a walk, single and dropped third strike – before capitalizing with a grand slam and solo home run to break the game open. Freshmen
Darby DeRuyter and
Kyla Cook both pitched in relief.
Â
Mallory Brown,
Destiny Dunlap,
Jada Cargo-Acosta and
Emily Panush all singled for LCC. Brown's single was smashed off the fence, quickly played on a carom by the Bulldogs right fielder.
Â
The Red Devils bounced back in the later game, going up 3-1 over Everett headed to the bottom of the fourth inning. But with the rain pounding and an Everett hitter losing her grip on her bat, the umpires ruled the game over.
Â
Rylee Peters made her LCC debut in the pitching circle, fanning one Trojan and giving up three singles in 3+ innings.
Â
Lower Columbia scored two runs in the first inning.
Katelyn McGough led off the game with a sharp single and was pushed to third base after walks to Behic and
Ada Williams. Brown and
Katie Adkins drove in runs on back-to-back ground outs.
Â
The other LCC run came in the fourth when Brown led off with a single. Pinch runner
Kennedy Williams scored from first on Adkins' ringing double to left center that followed.
Â
Lower Columbia travels to Pasco next weekend to play two doubleheaders at Columbia Basin College. The Red Devils meet Big Bend on Friday, March 4 at noon and CBC on Saturday, March 5 at noon.
