(Port Angeles, WA) – The Lower Columbia women's basketball team ran into two outstanding teams at the First Fed Pirate Classic in Port Angeles Saturday December 3-4.
The Devils beat Bellevue 78-62 on Saturday and then dropped a 63-55 game to the host Peninsula team on Sunday.
Against Bellevue,
Jazlynn Novelli led all scorers with 23 points. The sophomore from Wasilla, Alaska was 6 for 10 from three-point range. She also pulled down eight rebounds.
Aivine Soakai tallied 18 points and earned seven rebounds.
Playing in front her home town fans,
Courtney Swan scored 10 points off the bench. The freshman from Neah Bay looked comfortable in her surroundings.
LCC's
Katelynn Forner filled the stat sheet with seven points, nine rebounds, seven assists, two steals and just two turnovers from the point guard position.
Paige Mace had eight points and six boards.
The Devils had to hang around Port Angeles before finally getting to tip off against Peninsula in a rematch of last year's NWAC championship game, won by LCC. The Pirates came out inspired and raced to a 23-10 lead after one quarter and a 40-21 lead at the half.
Lower Columbia didn't quit and got back into the game by winning the third quarter 21-9. Down just three 58-55 with 53 seconds left, Coach
Lucas Myers designed a play to get Novelli a clean look three but it was in and out. The Devils had to go to the foul game and the Pirates were able to weather the comeback for the victory.
Novelli had 22 points to go with eight rebounds. Soakai had another double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, eight on the offensive end.
Although not quite the stakes as last March's title game, it was a big win for the Pirates. LCC will have a chance at some revenge when the two teams meet again in lass than a week. The Pirates visit Myklebust Gym on Saturday December 10
th with the tip off at 2 pm.
The Devils before that will host the Edmonds Tritons on Tuesday December 6
th. The game begins at 6 pm at Myklebust Gym.
