(Tacoma, WA) Red Devils soccer clinched their NWAC playoff birth with a 2-0 win over the Tacoma Titans on Saturday, October 22.
Lower Columbia soccer was ready for a cold and raining day in Tacoma but the clouds parted and the sun shined making it a good day for some NWAC soccer. The Red Devils started off strong dominating time of position and keeping the Titans defense on their heels throughout the first half. LCC had 10 shots on goal to Tacoma's 1 in the first 45 minutes but none of them would find the back of the net. Tacoma's goal keeper, Ashtyn Thomas, would be credited with 6 saves as the first half ends scoreless.
The second half started with Tacoma forward, Emma Magnuson, finding herself in a one on one vs LCC keeper
Kyla Pires. Magnuson's shot would take a bounce over Pires and a slow roll towards the LCC goal only to bounce off the right post. This close call served as a bit of a wake up call for the Devils but it wasn't until the 67th minute that their perseverance paid off.
Alexandra Dolce and Libby brown combined to get the ball to
Sunny Bennion who powered it past Tacoma's keeper to give the Devils goal number 1. About twelve minutes later, in the 83rd minute, Brown hit the perfect cross to
Nataija Blaylock who tipped it in to give the Devils a 2-0 lead.
Lower Columbia out shot Tacoma 24 to 5. LCC also had 4 corner kicks to Tacoma's 0.
Tacoma's Goalie had 15 saves on the day. LCC's
Kyla Pires had 3 saves.
LCC's
Jasmari Nolasco and Tacoma's Ky Scott both received yellow cards.
Next up for the Red Devils (10-0-04/12-2-5 overall) is a road trip to Olympia on Wednesday, October 26, to face the South Puget Sound Clippers (2-13-0/3-17-0 overall). Kick off is set for 2:00 pm.
