Bullpen Shines But Offense Sputters In Split At Pierce

The Lower Columbia College baseball team got two solid performances from the bullpen and Daniel Gernon had a two-homer game, but it ended up a split with the Pierce Raiders on Sunday May 9th.

The Devils won the first game 4-3, but they managed just seven hits.  Matthew Schwarz led the way by going 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.

Down 3-0 after four innings, the Red Devils used sacrifice fly's to get back into the game.  Kyle Casperson and Schwarz each hit a fifth inning sac fly to make it 3-2 Pierce.  Grant Henry's sacrifice fly in the sixth tied it up.

LCC won it in the top of the 9th when Drew Steelhammer's ground ball to short was misplayed allowing the eventual winning run to score.

Starter Griffin Henry went six innings allowing 10 hits, three walks, five strikeouts and three earned runs.

Aaron Robertson had an interesting 7th inning when he allowed four hits but no runs to keep Pierce at bay.

Daniel Furman got the victory by blanking the Raiders over the last two innings.

The offense was again quiet in the second game, except for Gernon.  Gernon hit a solo homer in the first inning then followed it up with a two-run shot in the third.  Gernon was 3 for 4 with the two longballs and three RBI's.

The rest of the LCC lineup had just three hits.

Starter Michael Callia Jr. went three innings. He allowed four hits, four runs, four strikeouts and two walks.

Alex Bratton kept Pierce close with three innings of one-hit relief. Bratton gave up two runs, but both were unearned.

By taking 3 for 4 games with Pierce over the weekend the Red Devils are now 19-3 on the season.  A big series looms as Lower Columbia will travel to Tacoma to play the Titans (18-4) on Saturday May 15th at 1pm.

The two rivals will then hook up at Story Field on Sunday May 16th at 12 noon.
