Devils Cap Weekend And Season Sweep of TCC. Season Over?

The Lower Columbia College Red Devil baseball team is 23-3 after taking four games against rival Tacoma this weekend.

Now the question is….Is the season over?

Grays Harbor College contacted LCC Sunday morning with information that some Grays Harbor players have tested positive for Covid-19. The GH program was put into a 14-day quarantine and so the LCC vs Grays Harbor series has been cancelled.

LCC has been in contact with a team out of the North Division about possibly playing at Story Field on Saturday May 22nd.  That decision will probably not be known until Monday or Tuesday.

If it is the end of the Devil season, what a season it was!

With the sweep over Tacoma, LCC is now 23-3 on the season.

The scores on Sunday were 4-1 and 5-3.

In the first game Sunday at Story Field, the Devils broke a 0-0 tie in the 4th inning with two runs on RBI single by Tyler Reese and Kyle Casperson.

That gave Devil starter Griffin Henry the lead and he was up to the challenge. Henry went six shutout innings allowing just two Titan hits, two walks and five strikeouts.

Cole Bertram came on in relief and went three solid innings for the save.  Bertram gave up just an unearned run and no hits.

The finale Sunday was a great Red Devil rally.  Down 3-1 after 5 ½ innings, LCC rolled a four spot. Matthew Schwarz, Ethan Stacy, Drew Steelhammer and Eric Luchies all had RBI single in the frame.

Starter Michael Callia Jr. went 4 1/3 innings allowing three runs. The bullpen picked him up.  Jeter Larson worked around four hits to blank the Titans in 1 1/3 innings.  Alex Bratton then shut the door with  1 1/3 inning of hitless relief.

Saturday in Tacoma, LCC took both games 8-6 and 7-5.

The Devils jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning of the first game highlighted by Steelhammer's two-run homer.

Starter Spencer Andersen was in cruise control until he ran into trouble in the sixth and seventh.  Reliever Brody Merritt gave up a run in the 7th.  Bratton gave up a run on two walks, although he did get credit with the victory.  Ryan Pitts came on to lock it down with the final two outs.

Grant Sherrod had an RBI double in the game. Liam Kerr provided some much needed insurance in the ninth with his first college home run.

The second game went into an extra inning international tiebreaker.  Tied 4-4 after seven frames, LCC came up huge in the extra inning when Daniel Gernon hit a two-run double and Steelhammer followed with an RBI single.

Daniel Furman did a good job in relief of starter Sam Stuhr.  Furman got the win with three solid innings allowing just one run and three hits.

LCC went 6-0 in the season series against Tacoma.

Now the waiting game.  Is the season over or will these talented Red Devils get another chance to play?

Stay tuned.
