Game Recap: Softball | | Dave Andrew

Behic, McGough lead Red Devils to Sweep

Have a day, Jade Behic. And you too, Katelyn McGough.

Behic, a redshirt freshman from Kapolei, HI launched her Lower Columbia Softball career pitching a shutout in game one of Saturday's doubleheader with Pierce. But the fireworks didn't end in the circle as Behic was 6-6 at the plate on the day – with a double, triple, home run, five runs and five RBI, as the Devils two-timed the Raiders 11-0 and 17-4 at Tam O' Shanter Park in Kelso.

McGough, a freshman from Willapa Valley homered in each game, collected four hits and drove in seven runs.

The NWAC West matchup was originally slated to be played at Pierce, but a wet field moved the game to Kelso. The Red Devils hit their home field ready to roll in their first games of 2021.

On the day, the Red Devils out hit Pierce 32-8, committed only one error and the pitching staff issued just four walks while registering 12 Ks.

GAME 1: LOWER COLUMBIA 11, PIERCE 0 (5 INNINGS)
An effective rise ball and tricky change-up helped Behic fan eight Raiders, while allowing just three hits and one walk. And she got plenty of help from her offense, which broke loose to score four runs in the second inning and six in the third inning to run away early.

McGough blasted a towering three-run home run and singled in her college debut and shortstop Taylor Alto was 3-3 with a double and two RBI. Kinzey Williams collected two hits, as did freshman Maddie Curaming – including a double and one RBI.

Behic, Kaylee Barnum and Ada Williams all pounded RBI doubles in the first game.

GAME 2: LOWER COLUMBIA 17, PIERCE 4 (5 INNINGS)
The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but that lasted all of two batters as Kinzey Williams led off the bottom half for LCC with a sharp single and McGough followed with an opposite field, two-run rocket that landed in the slough beyond the Field #2 right field fence.

Behic's triple and Ada Williams' ringing double put LCC up 3-1 to end the scoring in the first inning.

The big fireworks came in the second as LCC roped eight hits and plated seven runs. Kennedy Williams joined older sister Kinzey to line back-to-back singles, McGough doubled them home, Behic lined an RBI single, Ada Williams singled, Barnum smoked an RBI double, Curaming lined an RBI single and Mallory Brown joined the party with an RBI single.

Brown got the start in the circle for LCC and was solid over three innings in her college pitching debut. The freshman from Gooding, ID allowed three runs, four hits, one walk and fanned two Raiders.

The Devil bats stayed alive as Behic and Ada Williams hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning and Alto added an RBI single.

Freshman Tatum Guzman pitched the final two innings, giving up a single run and striking out three.

Behic finished game two with four hits and Kinzey Williams and Ada Williams each had three hits. McGough drove in four runs in game two.

Lower Columbia is now 2-0 on the season. The Red Devils head to Centralia to meet the Blazers on Monday at Fort Borst Park. The first pitch of game one is at 3:00 p.m.
