Lower Columbia's
Katelyn McGough went 3 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs to lead Lower Columbia College to a 7-3 victory over Centralia in the first game of a doubleheader on Monday April 12.
Â
The Devils jumped out with six first inning runs in game two and never looked back in a 14-4 win via the mercy rule in five innings, to earn the sweep.
Â
GAME 1: LOWER COLUMBIA 7, CENTRALIA 3
McGough got the offense going in the first inning when she slammed a solo homer, her third long ball of the season. After a
Jade Behic single,
Ada Williams put one on the launching pad for a two-run shot. The Devils had a 3-0 lead for Behic who took the circle.
Â
Although Behic struggled in the first (by her standards), she settled down and tossed a complete game seven-hitter with seven strikeouts. The redshirt freshman gave up two runs and three hits in Centralia's first frame, but she was solid after that.
Â
Trailing LCC 7-2 in the sixth, Centralia threatened with a pair of singles and a run-scoring fielder's choice. But Red Devil catcher
Brittnee Harvill chased down a wild pitch and flipped to Behic covering for a big second out, before Behic fanned the last hitter to end the rally.
Â
Kaylee Barnum also had a big game for the Devils with a single, homer and a double with two RBIs.Â
Karsyn Zaragoza had two hits.
Â
GAME 2: LOWER COLUMBIA 14, CENTRALIA 4 (5 INNINGS)
Five Red Devil hits, a walk and four Blazer errors led to a six-run LCC outburst to start game two. A two-run single from
Maddie Curaming was the big blow.
Â
In the third inning after the first two Devil batters were retired,
Kinzey Williams slapped a single and ignited a five-run two-out rally. McGough followed with a run-scoring double, Behic drove in a run with a single and
Mallory Brown later popped a two-run single.
Â
Up 12-1, freshman pitcher
Tatum Guzman threw strikes and let the Devil defense work behind her. The Blazers added two runs in the third and one in the fourth. Guzman struck out the side in the fourth after a lead off home run. She got the win, fanning four and allowing just one walk. Brown pitched the 5
th inning, allowing just one baserunner.
Â
For the game Behic was 4-4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Curaming had a pair of hits and three RBIs, McGough had three hits and an RBI, Barnum two doubles and an RBI,
Kinzey Williams had two hits and an RBI and Brown added two hits and two RBI.
Â
Lower Columbia is now 4-0 on the season and headed to Aberdeen on Wednesday to play Grays Harbor at the Bishop Sports Complex, first game at 3:00 pm.
