Things did not go the Red Devils way on Wednesday, November 3, when the Tacoma Titans came to Myklebust gym.
The Titans (5-5,8-10) were in 4th place in the NWAC west region standings right behind the Red Devils (6-3,11-6) with both teams looking to solidify their playoff spots. Tacoma came out pumped up and hitting hard has they jumped out to a quick 14-7 led in the first set and never looked back as they went on to take set one 25-18.
The Devils reset and came back out in set two ready for battle. The second set saw 7 lead changes over the course of the match. Tacoma, at one point went on a 6 point run to take a 15-11 advantage but the Devils answered with a 7 point run of their own to take an 18-15 led. LCC held off Tacoma's challenges to win the second set 25-21 and tie the match at 1-1.
Just like set two, set three was a back and forth battle with several led changes and both teams hit 5 point runs.
Angela Sullivan gave the Devils a boost with 5 big kills to give the Devils a 21-19 led but, In the end, it was LCC errors that gave Tacoma the edge they need to take a 25-22 win of set two and the 2 sets to 1 match led.
Set four, once again, was a point for point battle as both teams showed just how much they wanted the win. The set was tied at 20 and then a kill by
Olivia Kelzenberg, some Tacoma errors and big blocks by
Jayden Foster, Sullivan, and
Emily Borgstedt secured a 25-22 LCC win of the fourth set. Setting up a fifth and final showdown.
Tacoma took a quick 9-3 led in the fifth set but the Devils were not going to lay down and battle back to within 1 point but that would be as close as they would get. Tacoma pulled out the 15-12 win of set five to take the 3-2 match win.
Camryn Wilson led the Devils with 15 kills and 29 digs. Sullivan finished the night with 10 kills and Foster added 8 kills.
Jazzy Golly and Kelzenberg were big up front with 4 blocks each and Borgstedt had 3 blocks on night.
Ashley Noah and
Amanda Holm split setting duties with 23 and 22 assists respectively.
Emma Nelson was money as usual in the back court with 34 digs
The loss sets up the Friday, November 5, match vs Centralia as a must win for the Red Devils. Friday is also sophomore night for Devils volleyball and we will take time before the 6:00 pm match to celebrate our 9 amazing sophomores.
