Red Devils Sweep Opening Day

Errorless defense, 23 hits and solid pitching added up to a two-game sweep for Lower Columbia Softball on Saturday – five-inning mercy rule wins of 10-1 over Bellevue and 13-3 over Everett.

Both games were played at Bellevue College. The Red Devils will meet Bellevue at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday to complete the weekend. Everett bowed out of Sunday action.

Sophomore Trinity Naugle got the softball from Coach Traci Fuller in the opener vs. the Bulldogs and pitched a gem. She allowed only three hits while striking out two and issuing just one walk in the five-inning 10-1 Devils win. Naugle's defense flashed the leather behind her – namely Kinzey Williams in left field, 2B Valeti Fifita, catcher Zoe Naugle (threw out an attempted base stealer) and 1B Sariah Payne

After going scoreless the first two innings, LCC's offense erupted for six runs in the 3 rd and four more runs in the 4 thinning. Ada Williams swung the most lethal bat, drilling a grand slam in the 3 rd and then a two-run shot in the 4 thinning.

Saydie Harris was 3-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Kinzey Williams reached base three times with two singles and a walk, had an RBI and stole a base.

Game two vs. Everett saw a shaky start for LCC as the Trojans strung together two walks, a bloop single and a double to jump ahead 3-0 after one inning. The Red Devils went to work scoring four runs in the top of the 2 nd inning and never trailed again on the way to a 13-3 win.

Harris had another three-hit game and drove in three runs. The sophomore from Kelso was 6-7 for the two games with five RBI and added an outstanding catch at the CF fence.

Kaylee Barnum keyed a seven-run 4 th inning with a no doubt, towering two-run home run.

Catcher Taylor Avram was 3-3 with a double and three RBI in her college debut. Emily Churchill ripped a pair of doubles and drove in two runs and Taylor Alto smoked a triple and scored two runs for LCC. Shortstop Bryanna Soares reached base three times with a single and two walks and made two good defensive plays.

Winning pitcher Lindsay Pace made her college debut in the circle and was strong after battling out of the first inning jam, allowing just two hits and fanning five Trojan hitters. Trinity Naugle pitched a perfect 5 th inning in relief to close out the Red Devil win.

Lower Columbia opens its 2020 home schedule with a doubleheader vs. Shoreline on Saturday, February 29 at 1:00 p.m at Heerensperger Field at Tam O'Shanter Park in Kelso.
