Four-Run 7th Propels Devils to Weekend Sweep

What a long, cold, crazy night it was Sunday for Red Devils softball. In the end Lower Columbia rallied and then held off Bellevue College 15-11, to wrap up a 3-0 opening weekend in Bellevue.

On Saturday LCC beat Bellevue 10-1 and Everett 13-3, both five-inning mercy rule wins. The Red Devils were also scheduled to play Everett on Sunday, but the Trojans opted not to travel back to Bellevue.

On Sunday it wasn't over until Lower Columbia centerfielder Saydie Harris, with the bases loaded with Bulldogs, squeezed a wind-whipped towering fly ball into her glove on the warning track for the final out.

Sophomore pitcher Trinity Naugle went the distance for the win, throwing 130 pitches in raw conditions. Naugle issued only one walk on the night, to go along with three Ks and six earned runs.

The Red Devil offense was relentless pounding 21 hits, milking seven walks and scoring in all seven innings – including four runs plated in the top of the 7th to break an 11-11 tie.

With two outs and no Devils on base in the final inning, Ada Williams lit the fuse with a ringing double and later scored when a hot grounder by Ellie Conley was mishandled. Kaylee Barnum followed with a single and then Karsyn Zaragoza came up big, driving the ball into the left-center gap for a two-RBI double.

Valeti Fifita drove in Zaragoza with a hot smash just inside the 3rd base line to give LCC the final four-run advantage.

Fifita and Kinzey Williams both had three-hits and three RBI, hitting 1-2 in the lineup. One of Williams' hits was a triple. Zaragoza and Conley also had three hits and two RBI each.

Lower Columbia had eight doubles – two each by Zaragoza, Zoe Naugle (two RBI), Ada Williams (one RBI) and Emily Churchill.

Saydie Harris was 1-3 with two RBI, culminating a weekend where she was 7-10 with eight RBI.

Lower Columbia is off until Saturday, February 29 when it hosts Shoreline in the home opener. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m. at Heerensperger Field at Tam O' Shanter Park in Kelso.
