It was a great college basketball game.
Â
It just didn't end well for the Lower Columbia College Red Devils.
Â
In a back-and-forth battle in front of a great crowd, Cacoa Chatman hit a tough, contested three with less than a second left to give South Puget Sound an 84-82 victory on Wednesday January 15
th.
Â
The Clippers relied on Chatman (23 points), Ben Janssan (25 points) and Branden Bunn (22 points) to get a big road victory. All three hit a myriad of tough shots throughout the night.
Â
South Puget Sound had a seven point lead with 4:00 minutes left but the Devils didn't quit.Â
Samaad Hector gave LCC the lead when he hit two clutch free throws with 10 seconds left. Chatman then hit the heartbreaker. With 0.9 second left, Hector tried an off balance heave from 40 feet and it was no good.
Â
Hector was more than good. The sophomore from Skyview scored a game high 33 points and pulled down 20 rebounds. Hector leads the NWAC in rebounding at 14.8 per game. It was his 17
th double-double in 18 games this season. Samaad showed that his game is more than cleaning up around the glass. Hector was 4 for 6 from beyond the arc.
Â
The Red Devils had a huge 52 to 23 advantage in rebounding. LCC shot just 38 percent on the home floor while the Clippers were feeling it at 47 percent. SPSCC hit 44 percent of their long range shots.
Â
No other Red Devil scored in double figures.Â
Martis Johnson,
Alexis Angeles, and
Amiri Chukwuemeka had nine points each.
Â
The Devils slipped to 2-1 in the west as they get ready to host the Grays Harbor Chokers on Saturday January 18
th. Game time is 7:00 pm.
