After losing twice on Friday at division-leading Mt. Hood, Lower Columbia Softball bounced back to two-time Clark Saturday on its home diamond. LCC is now 13-6 overall and 6-4 in NWAC South Region play.
Friday's first game in Gresham vs the Saints was a classic battle of two NWAC heavyweights. After MH jumped ahead 3-0 in the 2nd inning,LCC's
Sarah Russell blasted a three-run home run to tie the game in the 3rd.
Then in the 6th with Mt. Hood up 4-3,
Saydie Harris,
Lauren Lunt and
Sarah Potwin ripped consecutive RBI doubles to put the Red Devils up 6-4.
But Mt. Hood rallied to score three runs in the bottom half of the inning to regain a 7-6 lead. LCC's
Valeti Fifita led off the 7th with a single and stole second, but she was left stranded, ending the game.
Harris had three hits, while Potwin, Fifita and
Sophia Parsons had two hits each.
Game two started well for Lower Columbia, as
Sarah Potwin belted a long 2-run homer in the first inning. But the Saints tied the game in the bottom half and then later hit three home runs and scored nine runs in the 3rd inning to effectively put the game away.
Potwin had three RBI's for Lower Columbia in the game two loss.
Back on the home diamond, Saturday was a new day and the Red Devils got an outstanding pitching performance from
Trinity Naugle in the opener. The Freshman from Castle Rock went the distance, while striking out five and allowing just two walks.
Lunt once again was hot at the plate with three hits and a pair of RBI.
Kinzey Williams also had three hits and helped ignite the offense from the nine-hole in the order.
Skylar Hunter added two hits.Â
The defensive highlights included a slick 6-4-3 double play turned in by Hunter, Fifita and
Allie Hall, along with CF Harris gunning down a Clark runner at third base to end a Penguin rally in the 4th inning.
Wheeler got the complete game win in the circle, allowing just one walk in her 5th start back since she helped lead LCCÂ to NWAC women's basketball post-season play.
The Red Devils are back on the home dirt on Wednesday, April 3, hosting Chemeketa. The doubleheader begins at 3:00 p.m.
