It was a wet, wild and cold opening to the season for the Lower Columbia College softball team.
Playing a Bellevue College, the Red Devils tied a game, won a game and lost a game as the team got out on the field together for NWAC action.
In the four team affair, the Devils, Bellevue, Everett and Clackamas all lost a game by the mercy rule and all won a game by the mercy rule.
LCC took on Everett first on Saturday night February 23rd. At times it was pouring rain and when it wasn't raining, it was bitter cold.
Down 5-1, the Devils exploded for four runs in the sixth inning to up the game and the game ended up in an 8-8 tie.l
Lauren Lunt had a big two-run double to get the offense going.Â
Skylar Hunter's two run single tied it up. Hunter was 3 for 3 with three RBI's in the game.
Sophia Parsons had two hits.
Trinity Naugle got out of a 6th inning jam to preserve the tie. The game was called due to monsoon conditions. A schedule game with Bellevue Saturday night was also cancelled.
The Devils unleashed some serious Payne in the first game on Sunday. Making her first college appearance,
Sariah Payne blasted a grand slam in her first college at-bat, part of a six run first inning for LCC.
Payne wasn't finished as she got back up in the second frame and hit a three-run shot, part of another six run inning for LCC.Â
Tera Geimer hit a three-run double in the inning and the rout was on.
Payne added another RBI single as she had eight RBI's in the Devils 18-3 victory. Naugle went the distance to get the five inning complete game.
In the final game of the weekend, Bellevue and LCC were locked in a pitchers duel through three innings.Â
Payne came through again with a two-run homer, her third long ball of the day, and LCC had a 2-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings.
Bellevue broke through with six runs in the 4th including four hits, two walks and an LCC error. The Bulldogs went on to a 10-2 victory in five innings.
The Devils (1-1-1) had their road trip to the Tr-Cities cancelled due to the snow and ice that is lingering there. The Devils are looking at putting together a replacement home double header with Walla Walla on Saturday March 2nd.
