It was a good night all around for the Lower Columbia Men's Basketball team on Wednesday, December 4, as they defeated Portland 96-85. The Red Devils are now 6-1 on the season.
Â
In the win over the Panthers the Red Devils faced a quality, well-coached opponent, had to dig deep to come back from an 81-78 deficit in the last seven minutes, got balanced scoring from the lineup and productive minutes from the bench. That's exactly what Coach
Mickey Polis wants to see in a non-league game as the Devils prepare for NWAC West play, starting in January.
Â
Alexis Angeles led LCC with 23 points, including 10-12 from the free throw line.
Samaad Hector was dominate inside with another double-double – 18 points and 18 rebounds, along with four steals and three blocks.
Martis Johnson carried the load in the first half, hitting three 3-point shots and scoring 17 of his 19 points.
Â
Travis Patrick added 13 points and six rebounds off the bench. Freshmen reserves
Juwan Couey (seven points) and
Rarey Sommer (six points) also played well.
Cody Young added four points, four rebounds, five assists, three steals and a big second-half blocked shot that thrilled the Red Devil faithful.
Daniel Hornbuckle was the top scorer for the Panthers with 28 points. Travion Weiss also put up 19 points and had 9 rebounds for Portland.Â
Â
Lower Columbia plays its final home game of 2019 when it hosts Clark on Saturday, December 7 at 5:00 pm. The Devils have won 6 of the last 10 games vs the Penguins, including last year when the Devils handed them a 97-72 loss.Â
