Lower Columbia women's basketball got the 2019-20 season kicked off over the weekend at the Lane Titan Classic in Eugene, OR.
The Devils opened the weekend vs the Blue Mt. Timberwolves on Friday, November 15. LCC started strong outscoring the Timberwolves 23-20 in the first period. The Devils carried this momentum through the first half going into the locker room with a 36-30 lead at the half. The second half of action had the Devils outscoring Blue Mt. 39-20 to get the "W" with a final score of 75-50.
Danica Schmidt lead the Devils with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 steals.
Madison Mosier put up 11 points and had 3 steals of her own.
Cherita Daugherty pulled down 10 rebounds.
Day two of action had the Devils going up against the Columbia Basin Hawks. Again, the Devils started off strong in the first period outscoring the Hawks 16-14 but the Hawks got hot in the second period and LCC was unable to match them has the Hawks took a 35-29 lead into the half. The Devils were unable to overcome the deficient has Columbia Basin out shot them 35-27 in the second half. Final score was 69-56, Hawks.
Columbia Basin was 50.9% from the floor and 52.4% beyond the arc, while the Devils had a FG% of 33.8 and 3PT shooting of 16.7%
Melenatie Kata lead the Devils with 14 pts, 4 rbs, and 1 block. Daugherty had 13 pts, 8 rbs, and Mosier put up 9 points.
Raequel Domebo lead the Hawks with 18 points and 4 rebounds.
The third and final game of the weekend for the Devils was against the host team, Lane Titans, on Sunday, November 17, at 2:00 pm.
Once again Lower Columbia came out the gates strong going 42.9% from the floor, 66.7% 3PT shooting and 2-2 from the free throw line to take a quick 16-10 lead. Things cooled of a bit in the second period with the Devils only hitting 1 of 4 3PT shots and 5 of 15 FG. Fortunately, for the Devils, the Titans also had a tough second period hitting only 2-13 FG allowing the Devils to take a 29-20 lead at the half. The shooting woes continued for the Titans in the second half and the Devils took advantage scoring 18 points off turnovers to get the 65-47 win.
Mosier lead the Devils putting up 19 pts and collecting 4 boards. Daugherty scored 14 pts and pulled down 7 rebounds and had 6 steals. The Devils bench was big for LCC scoring 15 pts,
Jodi Noyes had 7 of those and 6 rebounds. Schmidt also had 5 rebounds.
Next up for the Devils is another road match vs the Clark College Penguins on Wednesday, November 20, at 6:00 pm.
The first home game of the season for the Devils will be Sunday, November 24, at 1:00 pm vs the Walla Walla Warriors.
