The Lower Columbia men's basketball team played six halves of basketball at the Bigfoot Classic in Spokane. Five of those 20 minute stretches were outstanding.
The Devils won two straight games and had a seven point lead at halftime in the championship game against Clark, but the Penguins took advantage of numerous free throw opportunities to beat the Devils 73-64 in the final on Sunday December 2nd.
After being treated to a practice session at the Gonzaga University basketball facility on Thursday, the Devils took the floor at Spokane on Friday and defeated Okanagan College 93-76.
Dwayne Stewart had a college career-high 26 points with 13 rebounds to lead the way.
Samaad Hector and
Seth Hall added 15 points each as LCC shot 58 percent from the floor and cruised to the victory.
Lower Columbia kept it going on Saturday December 1st and rode the career high 30 points of freshman guard
Martis Johnson to a 104-90 victory over Big Bend.
Johnson was 13 for 18 from the floor and he also pulled down nine boards.
Hector had another outstanding game for LCC, scoring 20 points with seven rebounds. Stewart was 6 for 9 from the floor and 6 for 9 from the line on the way to 18 points.
The championship game against Clark was looking good. Both teams were allowed to play physical college basketball and the Red Devils took a 42-35 lead into the locker room.
All of a sudden the game changed and the whistles started to sound, mostly against the LCC team. Clark went to line 24 times in the second half, making 21 of them. The Devils got to shoot just nine second half free throws, making just four. That was the difference.
Five Red Devils scored in double-figures led by the 15 points and 10 rebounds of Hector.
Devonte Dennis scored 12 points and Johnson and Hall had 11 each. Stewart had 10 points to cap off an excellent tournament.
The Devils take two of three games in Spokane and now they get ready for a rematch with Clark on Saturday December 8th. The game is at Clark College in Vancouver beginning at 4 pm.
