Box Score 3 The competition was big-time when the Lower Columbia College women's basketball team opened the season with an Arizona road trip.
The Devils lost three games at the Eastern Arizona College Monster Jam Classic, but the lessons learned will pay big dividends down the road.
LCC opened the season against an athletic, long and talented Cochise College team, losing 78-27 on Thursday November 15th. Cochise is a nationally ranked NJCAA Division I school with a 6'6" post and plenty of great players everywhere.
LCC was ambushed by all that talent, getting shutout 14-0 in the first quarter. The second quarter was also a blur as Cochise outscored the Devils 29-4. Despite the big deficit, the Devils didn't shrink away and actually won the 4th quarter 18-16.
Shasta Lofgren led the way with 11 points.Â
Bobbi Mott had six rebounds. LCC shot just 19% against that pressure defense.
The desert sojourn continued on Friday November 16th with an 85-72 loss to Pima College, a nationally ranked NJCAA Division II school.
The first half blues were also prevalent. The Aztecs outscored LCC 25-8 in the second quarter and had a 27 point lead.
LCC settled down and played much better in the second half, outscoring Pima in the final two quarters.
Kenya Lorton had 20 points to lead the way. Lofgren had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Nizhoni Wheeler socrfed 16 points.Â
Emily Packham had 15 points and seven caroms. Mott led LCC with 10 rebounds.
The trip concluded with a 70-53 loss to the host Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters.
Packham had 18 and Nones Wheeler added 12. Lofgren had nine points and six boards. Mott was again a force on the boards as she pulled down seven rebounds before leaving the game with a knee injury. She will get an MRI to check out the severity of the injury.
The Devils are back in Longview for the home opener on Tuesday November 20th. The Peninsula Pirates come in for a 6 pm game at Myklebust Gym.
The game will be streamed live on Devil Vision at lccreddevils.com.Â
