The Lower Columbia men's basketball team certainly never quit.
Rallying from 20 down in the second half, the Devils got within two but ended up on the short end of an 82-78 score on Saturday February 11th at Myklebust Gym.
Â
Khalil Thompson of Tacoma, who averages 21.7 points a game, put on a shooting clinic for the ages. He made 12 out of 23 three-pointers and went on to score 48 points. He was only nine shy of the NWAC record for most points in a game, set in 1970, 47 years ago, by Peninsula's Bernie Fryer, in the 1970 NWAC Championship game, with 57 points, as Peninsula beat host LCC 132-130 in overtime.
Leading the way for the Red Devils was Marcus Lord, with 19 points and seven rebounds. Keun Palu-Thompson ended up with 18 points. The Red Devils were without the services of their big man, Devin Johnson, who didn't suit up for the game due to concussion protocol.
During the furious comeback attempt by the Red Devils, head Coach Jim Roffler was baffled by a non-call on a layup attempt for the Red Devils, which appeared to be goal tending. After a conference, Roffler was assesed a technical foul, his first "T" of the year. It turned out to be a seven point swing.Â
Still, the Devils stayed with it and got to within two points twice inside the final minute. One out-of-bounds call was overturned via video replay costing the Devils a possesion with a chance to tie or go ahead.
Spencer Sweet finished with 13 points. Brandon Cotton added 11 points and five assists.
Even though the Red Devils came up short, the 48-point performance by Thompson will be talked about and remembered for years to come at Myklebust Gym.
With the loss, the Red Devils have dropped three very important league games. LCC will work hard the next two days, as they get ready for another extremely important West Region game against Green River, on Wednesday, February 15th, a team they beat in January at Green River. It is also Red Canoe Credit Union Night, with various prizes given away at half-time, of both the men and women's teams. Tip off is at 8 pm.
If you can't come to the game, it will be streamed live on Devil Vision via YouTube. Just search LCC Red Devil Athletics.
