The Lower Columbia College women's basketball team played against two of the perennial squads in the NWAC at the Clackamas Cross Over December 15-17.
Although the Devils lost to Clackamas and North Idaho, they competed against those teams and played hard in the process.
The three-day event started with the host team Clackamas. The Devils hot start went for naught. The Cougars rallied from six down at halftime to take a 72-64 victory.
The Devils went cold from the outside in the second half and ended up just 6 for 30 from distance (20%). For the game, the Red Devils shot 30 percent.
Tywanna Abbott continued her stellar play with 21 points and seven rebounds.
Shanay Dotson had 14 points, five boards and three steals.Â
Hayley Niles had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Saturday, the Devils took control early and rolled to a 93-76 victory over the Whatcom Orcas. The Devils led 30-11 after one quarter, but settled into a mediocre mode after that.
Abbott again shined with 25 points and five rebounds. Dotson had 14 points and eight rebounds.
Guard
Madison Crews had a double-double with 14 points and 11 boards.Â
Nizhoni Wheeler had 14 points and six rebounds. Niles contributed 11 points with six blocked shots.
Sunday's game with North Idaho was nip and tuck for three quarters before the Cardinals ended up with a 74-63 victory. NIC broke it open by outscoring LCC 23-12 in the 4th quarter.
Fatigue may have set in late in that game, but head coach
Chad Meadors was thrilled with the effort, saying his team played hard the entire game.
Abbott had 19 points and seven rebounds.
Kenya Lorton had 19 points and three steals.
Niles had a great game with supreme hustle to go with 13 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Wheeler also scored in double figures with 10.
The Devils are 8-4 as they take a few days off for Christmas. The Lower Columbia Holiday Classic begins Thursday December 28th at Myklebust Gym. LCC will open up against the Delena Dragons, led by former Red Devil great Mollee Schwegler. The Dragons will fill the slot vacated when Shoreline suspended its season.
The eight team tournament will feature four games on Thursday, four on Friday December 29th and three on Saturday December 30th.
