The Lower Columbia College Red Devils have earned 37 division championships over the years.
Make it 38.
The Devils clinched the West Region title with a four game sweep over Grays Harbor Friday May 13th and Sunday May 15th. LCC won on Friday 5-2 and 1-0, then clinched the crown with a 15-2 victory Sunday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam. LCC then closed out the regular season with a 3-2 extra inning victory in the weekend finale. Eddie Smith has captured the West title in two of his three seasons and will have his team in position for a chance at back-to-back NWAC titles.
Following the Friday sweep, 12 Red Devil sophmores were honored for their committment and sacrifice in the final league game at Story Field. That group is thrilled to know they will play more ball on the home field by clinching the division crown and earning an automatic berth to the NWAC Championships May 26-30 in Longview.
The first game Friday saw the Devils score two in the first and two in the 4th to take the 4-0 lead.Â
Kade Kryzsko went eight innings on the mound, scattering eight hits to get the victory.Â
Anthony Garcia pitched the 9th for his first college save.
Garrett Myers led the offense with two hits including a double and an RBI. Kryzsko had an RBI double and
Toby Johnson had two hits.
The upset-minded Chokers got good pitching in the second game. LCC scored the games only run in the first inning on a
Lorin Archibald RBI. Archibald and
Benny Kaleiwahea each had two hits.
Tyler Parsons was magnificent going the distance allowing just three hits over seven innings, striking out eight.
After a day off on Saturday, the Devils went to Olympic Stadium on Sunday and jumped on the Harbor for three runs in the first and then playing add on the rest of the way. Kryzsko was on fire at the plate going 5 for 6 with two triples and three RBI. Myers and
Taylor Davis each had three hits.Â
Ryan Engquist had two hits and two RBI.
Alex Torson got the win going 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs.Â
Max Tilton closed it out with four straight outs, keeping his ERA at 0.00.
With the West title in hand, the Devils then rallied for a 3-2 win in the weekend's final game. Down 2-1 going to the final inning, LCC scored one in the 7th to tie it and one in the 8th to win it. Kryzsko capped off a great weekend at the plate with two more hits and an RBI.Â
Todd Reese had a hit and RBI and
Justin Hughes also had an RBI.
The Devils close the regular season at 33-12 and 21-4 in the West.
Lower Columbia will wait for the results of the Super Regionals at four sites around the northwest. LCC will open the NWAC Championships on Thursday night May 26th. LCC will take on the winner of the South Super Regional tournament at 7:35 pm. Lane is hosting the South Region in Eugene.
