The LCC volleyball team delivered a dominant performance Monday afternoon, sweeping the Umpqua Riverhawks 3-0 in front of a spirited crowd at Myklebust Gymnasium. After a shaky first set, the Red Devils found their rhythm to secure a decisive victory, moving their season record to 3-2.
The first set was a rollercoaster, with both teams trading points and momentum early on. Umpqua's Kennedy Baylis Hines was a consistent threat, tallying five kills in the set. However, the Red Devils' balanced attack and aggressive serving from Karissa Otterstetter and Claire Neuman proved too much for the Riverhawks. LCC's relentless serving and Umpqua's errors gave the Devils the upper hand, ultimately leading to a 25-16 win.
The second set was where the Red Devils truly hit their stride. With the score tied 6-6, LCC went on an impressive run, fueled by sharp hitting from Kendall Humphrey and Irene Martinez. The team's efficiency was on full display with a remarkable .455 hitting percentage for the set, thanks to precise setting by Karissa Otterstetter, who racked up a total of 20 assists on the day. LCC's offense was a well-oiled machine, leaving the Riverhawks scrambling to defend against the variety of attacks. Despite a late surge by Umpqua, the Devils maintained control, closing out the set 25-20.
By the third set, the Red Devils had completely seized control of the match. The team's defense was exceptional, holding the Riverhawks to a mere .032 hitting percentage in the final set. LCC's Chesney Schultz was a standout, providing key kills to stop any momentum Umpqua tried to build. With the score at 14-7, the Red Devils put the pedal to the metal, scoring eight unanswered points to close out the set 25-17 and seal the sweep.
While Umpqua's Kennedy Baylis Hines led all players with 13 kills, the Red Devils' depth proved to be the difference-maker.Â
Humphrey's had 8 kills and 8 digs, Martinez put up 7 kills and a block.Â
Claire Neuman tallied 5 kills, 2 ace serves, and 4 digs.Â
Chesney Schultz added 4 kills and an ace serve.
Lillian Halberg and Kamryn Sande were stellar in defense with 9 digs each. Â
