The Devils were bunked in their Springfield, Oregon hotel rooms when the tragic news started to come in regarding the Umpqua softball team. LCC was slated to play the Riverhawks in a Saturday double header, but the games were cancelled.
Umpqua head coach Jami Strinz and freshman first baseman Kiley Jones were tragically killed when a driver crossed the center line and hit the Umpqua team bus head-on. Several Riverhawks players were injured and taken to the hospital for treatment.
LCC head coach
Traci Fuller, a friend and colleague of Strinz, put out a heartfelt social media post while the Devils were driving back to Longview Saturday morning. "How do you cope? We should be testing the bats and getting our teams warmed up to play softball right now. I should be talking to my friend Jami about their big wins last night. But instead, the unimaginable happened. I'm heading home with my team in tears trying to comprehend this horrific tragedy. I Can't help but feel the pain of the mother who lost her baby, and the young girl who lost her mom. Please join me in praying they find comfort in this extremely difficult time."
The Devils have a makeup doubleheader at Grays Harbor on Monday April 21st at 2 pm. Both the Red Devils and Chokers will be playing with heavy hearts as they continue doing what they love. What Jami and Kiley loved.
On behalf of the entire Lower Columbia College family, we offer prayers to the Umpqua team and entire campus community as they deal with this sorrow.
Umpqua Strong!
