Red Devils Roll to Four More Wins

The streak has reached 16 straight to open the season.

In a 4-3, 3-0 sweep of Southwestern Oregon on Tuesday it was all about Lower Columbia's pitching and defense to go along with some timely hitting. Then on Wednesday the bats exploded and the pitching stayed dominant in a 19-0, 25-0 sweep over Umpqua.

The four home wins extend LCC's record to 16-0 overall and 8-0 in South Region play.

Defensively there were lots of highlights including CF Joelie Eder with two outfield assists in game two vs SWOC, gunning down runners at the plate and third base. Lexi Grumbois was sterling at third base vs the Lakers.

The pitching continues to impress. Jadyn Terry, Ava Eib, Cerenity Fake and Zoey Hughes all got a win and Fake and Hughes added saves against SWOC. Hughes threw a no-no in her start vs. Umpqua, and over the 24 total innings the four freshman hurlers combined to allow just three runs and seven hits.

Hitting wise, LCC pounded 54 hits and scored 51 runs in four games. All told Eder, Gabi Silveria and Allison Baumgart homered twice, while Fake, Shaz Ancheta and Kaydence Mackin added one long ball each.

The Red Devils are on the road for awhile, Friday in Aberdeen vs Grays Harbor, Tuesday April 1 at Clackamas and Friday April 4 at Mt. Hood. The next home doubleheader is Saturday, April 5 with Centralia.

Tuesday-Wednesday Recap
Lower Columbia 4, SW Oregon 3: Terry was dominant through six innings, taking a no-hitter into the seventh inning with a 4-0 lead. But the visitors used three hits and a walk to cut the Devils lead to 4-2. Fake came on in relief in a dicey bases loaded situation and struck out two hitters for the save.

Grumbois led the 10-hit attack with a double, two singles and an RBI. Hailey Brooks added a single, double and RBI. Brooklyn Loose and Eder also plated runs for the Devils attack.

Lower Columbia 3, SW Oregon 0: Eib got the ball and pitched five outstanding innings, allowing three hits to the potent Laker offense. Hughes threw the final two frames and got the save for LCC.

SWOC looked to take the early lead after using a walk and hit-by-pitch to put two runners on in the first. But Eder was having none of that, taking a one-hop single and gunning down the would-be first run in a close play at the plate.
Offensively for Lower Columbia, Silveria had the big hit with a monster solo home run in the fifth inning for an insurance run. Eder and Baumgart had the other RBIs and Brooks added a triple.

Lower Columbia 19, Umpqua 0 (five innings): The Red Devil offense scored in all four innings, taking advantage of seven Umpqua walks and pounding out 19 hits. That total included five doubles and four homers.

Eder hit two HRs and plated six runners, Emma Langsi 3-4 (one 2B) and Hughes, Loose, Brooks and Terry each had two hits. Baumgart pounded a grand slam and Fake also went deep. Hughes and Savannah Hawkins added RBI doubles.

Fake pitched the five-inning win, allowing just one hit while fanning 11 Riverhawks. The defensive gem came when RF Lily Mattison nailed an Umpqua runner who was attempting to stretch a single to a double.

Lower Columbia 25, Umpqua 0 (five innings): Hughes was masterful in the circle, throwing a no-hitter. Three Umpqua runners reached on a pair of HBPs and a walk. Hughes has now thrown two perfect games and a no-hitter in LCC's first 16 games.

Lower Columbia banged out 19 hits and capitalized on nine Riverhawk walks and two HBP.
Grumbois led the way going 4-5, Mackin and Ancheta were both 3-4 with home runs and four RBI, Silveria 2-3 with a home run and three RBI and Baumgart hit 2-3 with a home run and four RBI. Brooks added a double, single and three RBI.
