Devils Get Key Split At Mt. Hood

(Gresham, OR) – The Lower Columbia softball team came up with an important split in a key South Region doubleheader on Saturday March 30th.

The Devils were so close to a sweep against the top ranked Saints.

Lower Columbia won the first game 11-7 riding a six run outburst in the first inning.  With three outs to go and leading 9-4 in the second game, Hood scored five in the bottom of the 7th to tie it and won in the 8th on a walk off homer.

Game One – Lower Columbia 11 Mt. Hood 7

LCC came out blazing in the first inning.  LCC scored six runs in the top of the 6th highlighted by a Teeghan Reams grand slam home run.  A bases loaded walk to Brooklyn Loose and a bases loaded hit-by-pitch preceded Reams grand slam.

The Devils scored three more in the second inning on back-to-back homers from Sawyer Stenson and Raychel Squibb.

Reams came through again with a two-run shot in the top of the 5th inning.

Reams was outstanding in the circle until the potent Saints struck with a grand slam in the 5th.  But Reams settled down after that and finished strong to get the complete game victory.

Game Two – Mt. Hood 10 Lower Columbia 9

LCC and Hood went toe-to-toe in the second game.  Lower Columbia took a 9-4 lead after scoring in six of the first seven innings behind starter Sadie Knutson.  But Mt. Hood rallied in the bottom of the 7th inning by scoring five runs to tie the game 9-9.

The Devils were turned away in the top of the 8th. Hood then won it with an Ava Carroll walk-off homerun.

Knutson went the distance and was on the cusp of a huge win before the Saints pulled it out.

Stenson hit two homers and drove in three runs. Squibb went 2 for 5 with a homer and two RBI's.  Bella Aspaas, Karlee VonMoos and Maliyah Twitty had two hits each.

The highly competitive South Region has three teams with just two losses.  Southwestern Oregon is 10-2 and LCC and Mt. Hood are 8-2.

The Devils have a huge home doubleheader with first place SWOC on Wednesday April 3rd. The twin bill gets underway at 3 pm at Heerensperger Field at Tam O'Shanter Park in Kelso.
