Great Comeback Keeps Devils Unbeaten

(Longview, WA) – It's not over until it's over.

When Wren Cecil drove in the winning run fueling an eight run comeback, it was over.

The Lower Columbia baseball ran its record to 9-0 with a sweep over the Everett Trojans on Saturday March 2nd at Story Field.

Game One – LCC 7 Everett 3

Hunter Lutman tossed six scoreless inning to get the victory.  The freshman allowed just three hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

The Devils jumped out to an early lead for Lutman as LCC scored three in the first inning and led 7-0 after four frames.

Royce Vandine got the party started with a solo homer in the bottom of the first.  Alex Hartnett followed up with a two-run shot in the same inning and the Devils were on their way to victory.

Cecil then hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 4th, energizing the Devil dugout. It was Cecil's first college homer.

Aaron Platner  gave up two hits and three runs, going the final three innings.

The home run by Cecil was just a hint of heroics to come…..

Game Two – LCC 10 Everett 9

The Trojans got to LCC starter Chayse Oxborrow in the third inning.  He gave up a three run homer and then reliever Stephen Hammergren allowed a two run single. Everett scored six in the inning.

Everett plated three more in the 4th and led 9-1 after four.

Down 9-2 going into the bottom of the 7th, the Devils came alive. Vandine drove in two with a single.  Garrett Cooper doubled in a pair, and Gunnar Shiotani came up with an RBI single. The five run inning gave LCC some hope.

Kaden Harris kept the Devils in the game by going 5 1/3 innings allowing two hits and striking out six.

Behind 9-7 going to the bottom of the ninth, the Devils got within one when Vandine hit his second homer of the day.  Shiotani doubled. Jace Nagler singled. Pinch runner Nate Gray junior then scored the tying run on a return throw from first that got past the pitcher.

Cue Cecil.  His RBI single scored Nagler and the Devils capped off an amazing comeback to sweep the day.

Sunday's double header with Everett was cancelled due to a pretty intense snow shower that hit Story Field.

With the two wins, the top-ranked Devils are now 9-0 on the season.  LCC will host Shoreline in a four game series Saturday and Sunday March 9th and 10th. Saturday's doubleheader at Story Field begins at 2 pm. The twinbill Sunday begins at 12 pm.
