Two wins on Friday, followed by a pair of losses on Saturday gave Lower Columbia a split of its games played February 23-24 in Mt. Vernon and Everett. LCC is now 5-3 on the season.
Â
Friday, February 23 at Skagit Valley:
Game 1: A long morning drive on gameday did not slow down the Red Devils. They sprinted out of the gate to bat around twice and scored 12 runs in the first inning, on the way to a 14-1 win over the Cardinals in five innings.
Â
Lexi Grumbois,
Sawyer Stenson and
Raychel Squibb opened the inning with consecutive singles. Five hits, five walks and a hit by pitch followed and the Devils plated a dozen runs.
Â
Stenson was 3-5 with two RBI, Squibb 2-2 and
Teeghan Reams and
Leanna Russell each drove in a pair of runs.
Â
Alli Heater registered her third win in the circle, going three scoreless innings while allowing four hits, fanning three Cardinals and walking none.
Alexis Moore pitched the final two innings.
Â
Game 2: This time it was Skagit Valley jumping up quickly, plating five runs off Reams in the first inning. But the LCC sophomore from Redmond, OR buckled down and shut out the Cards over the final six innings to earn the complete game win. She finished with two Ks, three BBs and gave up just five hits – and just one hit over the final six innings.
Â
While Reams kept SVC in check the Devil offense chipped away, taking its first lead at 7-5 in the sixth inning. A three-run seventh gave Lower Columba the 10-5 win and DH sweep.
Â
Allison Baumgart was 3-4 with a pair of doubles and two RBI and
Kaydence Mackin was 2-4 with four RBI to pace LCC.
Brooklyn Loose added two hits and two stolen bases.
Â
Saturday, February 24 vs Spokane (played at Everett College):
Game 1: Grumbois and Squibb both singled in the first inning, but Spokane pitcher Rebecca Carson would only allow one more Devil hit on the way to an 8-0 Sasquatch win in six innings.
Â
Grumbois had the other Red Devil hit and was 2-2 for the game.
Â
Heater started and allowed just one Spokane run in the first three innings. But a two-run home run and Red Devil infield error gave Spokane a 4-0 lead in the fourth. Four more runs in the sixth ended the game on the mercy rule.
Â
Game 2: Tough loss in the finale for LCC, as it took a 6-5 lead into the seventh inning. But Spokane parlayed a Red Devil miscue, two hits and two walks to score four runs and secured a 9-6 comeback win.
Â
Joelie Eder had two doubles, an RBI and hit 3-4 to lead the Red Devil offense. Grumbois and Stenson both doubled. Mackin made a sterling running grab of a liner in left field to save two runs when the game was tied in the sixth inning.
Â
Reams started and threw five-plus innings, striking out six Sasquatch and gave up five hits. Heater took the loss in relief.
Â
Lower Columbia hits the road on Saturday, March 2, traveling to Yakima Valley for a noon doubleheader.
