Red Devils Overpower Clippers in Straight Sets, Led by Farland’s 17 Kills

(Olympia, WA) The Lower Columbia Red Devils secured an impressive 3-0 victory over the South Puget Sound Clippers, demonstrating their strength and resilience throughout the match.

From the very first set, which they won 25-23, the Red Devils showed their ability to stay composed in tight situations. Despite trailing at times, their disciplined play allowed them to edge out the Clippers in critical moments, with the lead shifting multiple times. The Red Devils' teamwork and communication on the court were evident, especially in the long rallies and their ability to capitalize on the Clippers' errors.

A standout performance came from Samantha Farland, who led the charge with 17 kills, hitting at an impressive .361 percentage. Farland's powerful attacks consistently found their mark, forcing the Clippers onto the defensive. Farland wasn't just dominant at the net; she also contributed on defense with 8 digs, showcasing her all-around game. Supporting her on the offensive front, Kenny Collins added 7 kills, while Morgan Garrison chipped in 5 crucial kills, ensuring that the Red Devils had multiple attacking options throughout the game.

The setting duties were expertly handled by Allison Orantes, who distributed the ball with precision, racking up 17 assists. Orantes also contributed on the serve, notching 2 aces, and played a key role in the Red Devils' success in building and maintaining leads throughout each set. Lower Columbia's aggressive serving helped put pressure on the Clippers' receive game, forcing several service errors and putting the Red Devils in favorable positions for transition attacks.

Defensively, the Red Devils were relentless, recording 67 digs, with Madi Noel and Kenny Collins each contributing 20 digs apiece. Their defensive coverage ensured that South Puget Sound had difficulty finishing off rallies, even when they managed to launch strong attacks. The blocking game also swung in favor of the Red Devils, with 6 total blocks, led by the combined efforts of Layni Brandhorst and Farland at the net. Their ability to read the Clippers' offense and time their blocks effectively disrupted the rhythm of the Clippers' attacks, forcing them into numerous hitting errors.

Although the Red Devils had their share of mistakes—22 attack errors and 10 service errors—they compensated for them with a relentless offensive attack, racking up 36 kills across three sets. They displayed excellent resilience, particularly in the second set, where they managed to hold off a surging Clippers team to win 25-22 after several lead changes.

Lower Columbia's strategy appeared to focus on maintaining pressure on the Clippers, exploiting South Puget Sound's unforced errors while remaining aggressive at the net. Their ability to consistently close out each set demonstrated a well-rounded team effort, where every player contributed, either through strong defense, smart setting, or decisive kills.

Ultimately, the Red Devils' balance of power, precision, and teamwork carried them to a 3-0 victory in Olympia, WA, improving their record to 7-13 overall and 3-3 in league play. This win highlighted their potential as they continue their push in conference play, with the team firing on all cylinders and showing promising cohesion both offensively and defensively. It was a dominant all-around performance that underscored their growth and tenacity as a unit.
