Devils baseball got off to a hot start at the 2022 Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) championships over the Memorial weekend with a 9-1 win over Everett and a 17-4 win over Mt. Hood. Unfortunately, that would be it for the Devils as they drop the next two matches 2-1 and 3-1 vs Linn-Benton and Mt. Hood, respectively.
DAY ONE (Thursday, May 26)
Lower Columbia (36-14) started the NWAC tournament on Thursday, May 26 vs the Everett Trojans (31-14). The Tjonas struck first with a run in the bottom of the 1st but it was all LCC after that. The Devils tied it up in the 2nd off a
Liam Kerr sac fly to score Justin Stranksy. LCC put up two more runs in the 3rd after loading the bases. They then added two more runs in the 6th when
Tyler Peterson singled,
Matthew Lewis was hit by a pitch, and then
Ethan Stacy singles to load the bases.
Matthew Schwarz then knocked one to right field to score Peterson and Lewis to make it 6-1 LCC. Devil would add on more in the 7th and two more in the 9th to defeat Everett 9-1.
Stacy went 4-6 with an RBI,
Daniel Gernon was 2-4 on the day as was
Eric Luchies.
Ryan Pitts was stellar on the mound for the Devils going 7 innings with 6 k's and 6 hits to get the win.
Jadon Williamson came in for two innings of relief striking out 9 with 2 walks and 7 hits.
DAY TWO (Friday, May 27)
Next up for the Devils was the Mt. Hood Saints who defeated Tacoma 4-3 in their opening day game.
Lower Columbia came out swinging scoring seven runs in the top of the 1st inning on 5 hits and 1 Saints error. Devils added one in the 3rd, four in 4th, two in the 5th, and 3 in the 6th to defeat the Saints 17-4 in 7 innings.
Red Devils end the day with 15 hits and 15 RBI's.
Stransky was 3-4 with a double, Luchies was 2-3 with a double. Matt Schwarz and
Liam Kerr both were 2-4 of the day. Mattew Lewis was perfect on the day going 3 for 3 with 3 RBI's and 2 stolen bases.
Brayden Marcum got the start for the Devils on the hill doing 4 innings of work with 6 k's, 4 hits, and 1 run
Camdem Oram came in for 1 inning of relief with 1 strike out and 1 hit, followed by
Jase Schueller with 1 inning getting 2 k's and allowing only 2 hits.
Braeden Munger finished out the game in the 7th with 1 strike out, 1 hit, 2 runs, 1 walk.
DAY THREE (Sunday, May 29)
The Pacific Northwest weather was true to form as a system moved through on Saturday, May 28 forcing the NWAC to make the decision to cancel all games for the day.
Sunday had the Red Devils facing the only other unbeaten team in the tournament, the Linn-Benton roadrunners.
This match quickly became a pitchers dual as neither team was able to get many runners on. In total there were only 9 hits on the day with LCC having only 4. Linn-Benton scored first in the btm of the 4th off a triple. Lower Columbia tied it up in the top of the 6th with hits by Kerr and Lewis, Stacy was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Matt Schwarz struck out and
Kyle Parkman popped out to short.
Daniel Gernon then walked to score Liam. Luchies then grounded out first.
LCC would get two runners on in the 8th but leave them stranded. Linn-Benton would go on to score the go ahead run in the btm of the 8th when a Devils error allowed a run to come across the plate.
Linn-Benton would go on to win 2-1 over Lower Columbia.
Michael Schwarz threw 7.2 innings for the Devils with 3 K's, 4 hits, 2 BB, allowing on 1 run.
Aaron Robertson came in relief with 1 hit, 1 BB, and 1 run.
The loss meant that the Red Devils would now play the Mt Hood again in a loser out battle.
Once again the Devils only managed 4 hits in the game and allowed 5 in what would be their last game of the season in a 3-1 loss.
The Devils and Saints were tied at 1 going into the 6th inning when Hood scored on a wild pitch. The Saints would score again in the top of the 7th off an LCC error.
Lower Columbia's loan run came off a Stacy sac fly in the 3rd to score
Nick Miller who had singled to get on.
Stacy went 1-2 with and rbi and a walk
Ma.Schwarz, Stranksy, and Miller all went 1-4 on the day.
Brayden Wells got he start for the Devils on the mound doing 3 innings of work with 2 K's, 2 hits, 1 BB
Jadon Williamson was great in relief with 7 K's, 3 hits, and 1 BB.
Two Red Devils showed outstanding play in the field and were named to the All-Tourney team:
Ethan Stacy and
Matthew Lewis.
